Labs
Many Tufts professors are actively engaged in research, and volunteering in a research lab on campus is a great way to gain work experience and skills. Additionally, volunteering can be used for class credit.
The ENP department has several active labs pursuing different areas of interest.
Center for Applied Brain and Cognitive Sciences
The Center for Applied Brain and Cognitive Sciences is a collaboration between interdisciplinary scientists and engineers to further the understanding and application of brain and cognitive sciences. The Center conducts applied research geared towards understanding and enhancing cognitive capabilities and human system interactions between individuals and teams.
Several labs participate in The Center for Applied Brain and Cognitive Sciences including:
- Tufts Spatial Cognition Lab
- Tufts Human Robot Interaction Lab
- Tufts Emotion, Brain, and Behavior Lab
- Tufts Applied Cognition Lab
Usability Research Space
The Human Factors Research Lab (HFRL) and Human Factors Usability Lab (HFUL) have a wide range of devices using for measuring, assessing, prototyping, and testing. In the HFRL, this includes devices for physical and digital prototyping. Prototypes can be tested in the HFUL, which includes high-definition video and audio recording equipment for a more realistic testing environment. If you’re interested in reserving it for a project, talk to your professor.
THFES
Join other Tufts students who are passionate about Human Factors in the Tufts Chapter of the Human Factor and Ergonomics Society Facebook group. Students share information, events, and job postings. You can also sign up for the e-list here.

Maker Network
The Tufts Maker Network is a collection of on-campus resources, spaces, events, clubs, and projects that students are encouraged to participate in. Its purpose is to encourage students to learn by making, in whatever way they prefer.
Students of any major or background are welcome to join the network and help build Tufts’ interdisciplinary maker culture. Becoming a maker allows students to utilize Tufts’ makerspaces, participate in events, and easily capture and share the things that they make and learn from.
The Maker Network includes spaces like:
574 Boston Ave: Collaborative Learning & Innovation Complex (CLIC)
The Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex at 574 Boston Avenue anchors the Science and Technology Corridor—a new direction in collaborative teaching and research designed to meet the ever-evolving needs of our extraordinary faculty and students—and transforms research and learning on a daily basis at Tufts.
The Bray Lab machine shop is a full manufacturing facility including manual and CNC lathes and milling machines, a laser cutter, a CNC router, various rapid prototyping capabilities (3D printers), band saws, drill presses, and complementary equipment. To learn more, visit the Bray Lab website.
Jumbo’s Maker Studio is a rapid fabrication makerspace on the third floor of the Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex (CLIC) in the Human Factors Lab.
