HW2: CAD

Isometric view of chromium-plated R2D2 model in SolidWorks

I used SolidWorks to create a rendering of a metal R2D2.

Some difficulties that I encountered working on this assignment was getting adjusted to a new software and following the tutorials. SolidWorks feels different from OnShape, which I had previously used, in that the controls felt less intuitive and created more problems than efficient solutions sometimes. This could be because it is used for complicated modeling, thus being geared for more advanced users. Over time, continuously using SolidWorks allowed me to get comfortable with the controls. While we did start this project in class, it was difficult following a live walkthrough because any errors that came up could not be directly addressed by the instructor. This made it easy to fall behind; the online tutorials did allow me to work at my own pace, but it was easy to get lost between steps. One specific issue I struggled with was creating the assembly; there was a lot of mates that had to be considered and it was easy to miss a step especially during class.

To develop my CAD skills in the future, it would be great to work on more complicated models. This could be creating a prototype for my team project, or creating something functional that can be 3D printed. I could also learn techniques from people who have experience using CAD software.
