The Smithsonian American Art Museum seeks a creative and energetic individual to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals for major and leadership gifts. Duties include expanding the Museum’s donor community across the country; creating and implementing innovative strategies for securing major gifts; managing a portfolio of 100 prospects; and preparing proposals and other donor communications.

Job Requirements

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; the ability to meet frequent deadlines; and arts and humanities knowledge are essential to success. The candidate must have the ability to travel across the US an estimated 15 trips per year. Four to six years of experience at a national organization are desired. The American Art Museum is home to one of the largest and most inclusive collections of American art in the world. Its artworks reveal America’s rich artistic and cultural history from the colonial period to today and its branch museum, the Renwick Gallery, features outstanding modern and contemporary craft objects and decorative arts. In 2013, the Museum attracted over 1.2 million visitors and ranks as the 6th most visited art museum in America.

The Museum is a leader in sharing exhibitions and education programs across America as well as by video conference to military bases around the world. With our main historic building recently renovated, the museum now seeks to build its endowment funding for people, exhibitions, technology initiatives, and education.
