Leading the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden into its next phase of
growth, the Director will develop and implement a new Strategic Plan.
The Museum, located at 421 East 61st Street, New York, New York, is
owned and operated by The Colonial Dames of America. Celebrating its
75th anniversary beginning in May 2014, the Museum has been accredited
since 1983 by the American Alliance of Museums. The Museum interprets
its 1799 building as a day hotel from 1826 to 1833, emphasizing travel,
leisure, work and play in diverse antebellum New York in traditional and
engaging ways.

The Director is responsible for fundraising, programs, and exhibitions;
collections, facilities, and operations; and preservation and
improvement of the 1799 building and surrounding grounds.

The Director ensures the organization and its mission and programs are
consistently presented in strong, positive images to relevant
stakeholders, including the city¹s visitors and residents, to sustain
and grow the Museum¹s reputation. The Director builds and maintains
strong relations with museum and academic colleagues as well as with
donors, collectors, and local and regional businesses. Working with a
committed Board of Managers and Museum Committee, the

Director leads a workforce currently consisting of 2 full-time and 12
part-time paid staff, and 40 volunteers

Preferred Qualifications:

€ Minimum of five years¹ experience in management of a museum or
cultural organization;

€ MA in History, American Studies, Preservation, Art History, Public
History, or related field, or equivalent experience;

€ Demonstrated strong organizational and administrative skills,
including budgeting;

€ Highly computer literate with experience managing social media
applications and website development;

Experience with

€ Program development, educational pedagogy, and interpretation; strong
writing and communication skills;

€ Working with task-oriented teams composed of staff and volunteer members;

€ Recruiting volunteers;

€ Capital campaigns;

€ Grant sourcing with application protocols; and

€ Working with a non-profit board.

The Directorship is a full-time position and includes full benefits.
Occasional travel, evening, and weekend work required. Salary will be
