The Assistant Curator will be responsible for working with the curatorial staff on the museum’s permanent collection and its development; managing special exhibitions originating at the MHCAM or developed elsewhere; and supporting the teaching mission across a liberal arts curriculum.  The Assistant Curator reports to the Curator, and works closely with all members of the curatorial and education departments.

The Assistant Curator will:

  • assist with the development and oversight of the Art Museum’s collection of over 17,000 objects, including acquisitions, scholarly research and writing, cataloging, display, and conservation tracking
  • support the academic mission of the museum, working closely  with the Assistant Curator for Visual and Material Culture, as well as the Curator of Academic Programs and Assistant Curator of Education
  • oversee the planning and execution of special exhibitions and the writing of exhibition-related materials, together with other staff
  • respond to inquiries from researchers, scholars, students, and other visitors and manage the museums rights and reproductions operation
  • assist in the selection, training, and supervision of student curatorial interns and assistants
  • present gallery talks and tours as needed

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

The successful candidate will possess an advanced degree in art history, have excellent project management skills and a minimum of 2-3 years of museum or other directly relevant experience. Necessary attributes include a broad knowledge of art history, strong writing and editing skills, a keen orientation toward collaborative work in a fast-paced, team-based environment, and the ability to work both autonomously and collectively on multiple projects as needed. Also required are training in art handling as well as advanced computer skills including database programs, Excel, and Photoshop; experience with WordPress or Omeka is a plus, as are foreign languages.
