POSITION TITLE: Executive Director
SUPERVISED BY: Chair of the Board, Board of Trustees
SUPERVISES: All staff
BASIC ROLE: Functions as the CEO with overall responsibility for the leadership of the Museum, administration of all of its functions, and implementation of all policies approved by the Board of Trustees. Works the requisite hours and days necessary to accomplish all responsibilities.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
·         Works in conjunction with the Board to develop the strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local, statewide, national and international awareness and prominence.

·         Recommends policy to the Board and institutes administrative procedures to implement approved policies.

·         Supervises the human resources of the Museum including hiring and firing of staff.

·         Complies with the standards and policies of the New York State Board of Regents to maintain charter.

·         Directs the Museum’s operations, including development, education and public programming, finance, external communications, and staffing.

·         Leads and participates in all fundraising and development activities, including grant writing and developing relations with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.

·         Works cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with the Board, volunteers, and staff.

·         Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support.

·         Directs the overall development of public relations and marketing initiatives. Develops an effective communications plan to raise the profile of the Museum.

·         Manages, secures, and maintains the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as the collections held in the public trust.

QUALIFICATIONS:
·         Experience working with historic house museums, historical societies and/or museum collections
·         Strong leadership and organizational skills
·         Experience developing and implementing business and/or strategic plans
·         Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, non-profits, or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations
·         Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking
·         Prior experience with preservation and education issues
·         Experience in fundraising
·         Must be computer literate, and familiar with standard office applications, such as Word, Excel, Power Point and/or equivalents
·         Must be familiar with and demonstrate proficiency with various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn
·         Experience with financial management for a non-profit organization, including reports, budgeting and the ability to research and prepare financial proposals for museum initiatives as outlines in the overall Strategic plan and/or at the direction of the Board
·         Master’s degree preferred
