The Bronx Museum of the Arts is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents high quality Contemporary Art Exhibitions and Programming; free or subsidized art Education Programs to underserved Bronx youth; and free Public Programs that celebrate the cultural vibrancy of the borough. In celebration of its 40th anniversary in 2012, BxMA implemented a universal free admission policy to view the 50,000sq feet of space, supporting its mission to make arts experiences available to all audiences. Since its founding by community leaders in 1971, BxMA has played a vital role in the borough by helping to make art accessible to the entire community and connecting with local schools, artists, teens, and families through its community engagement programs.

The museum has substantially expanded its programs and its visibility over the past five years, and the next five years promise to be an exciting continuation of that growth curve as we embark on a 20/20 Vision Plan. With that in mind, Executive Director Holly Block, and the Board of Trustees, recognize the need to recruit a Deputy Director to assist in the management of the museum and the execution of its strategic plan.

The Position

The Deputy Director will partner with the Executive Director in the management of the museum’s full time and part time under 30 person staff and six primary departments:  Finance, Operations, Development, Curatorial, Education and Public Programs.

Given the museum’s ambitious growth plans, assisting in the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan, including a new Capital Project and future Endowment Campaign, will be a key responsibility of the Deputy Director.   The right candidate should assist in the development of funders and community contacts as well as be available for these meetings and events. They need to have a track record of implementation or program/project management.

The success of the Strategic Plan will be tied to the success of each department within the museum.  Accordingly, the Deputy Director will be responsible for in-depth departmental reviews and file written reports as needed while assisting the Executive Director in determining how each department can most effectively meet its goals.   As a senior member of the management team, the person will conduct weekly senior staff meetings, review weekly departmental reports, and assist in the budgeting process for each department and the museum as a whole.

The person will be responsible for the implementation of any recommendations resulting from departmental reviews.  With team building as a primary focus, the Deputy Director will be responsible for building a strong cohesive team with effective lines of communication within and across departments.
