As one of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh’s (CMP) four creative, inspiring, thought-provoking places of exploration, Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) is among the top natural history museums in the United States.  It maintains, preserves, and interprets an extraordinary collection of 22 million objects and scientific specimens, which are used to broaden our understanding of evolution, conservation, and biodiversity.   The 21st century CMNH inspires future scientists, and fosters scientifically literate citizens, as essential outcomes of a dynamic research organization.

The CMNH Director will establish the organization’s future direction and oversee the planning, implementation and assessment of innovative public programs, scientific research and collections management. This is an opportunity to build on CMNH’s history while redefining the 21st century museum.  The Director is responsible for CMNH’s overall performance. The position reports to the President and CEO of CMP.

Job Requirements

We seek a proven leader who has a passion for the natural sciences and is driven to accelerate progress on CMNH’s vision and mission.  The ideal candidate has had extensive experience and success leading high performance teams that deliver excellent results.  This person must exhibit success in collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders.  Experience with matrix management and convening diverse groups of people, to address common interests in a collegial, transparent and highly participatory manner is essential. This experience may have been gained in the corporate, public or nonprofit sectors.

This executive will be experienced in and enjoys building teams, structures and systems, to support a sustainable organization. This individual has knowledge and experience with nonprofit fundraising practices. At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university is expected.  A degree at the graduate level is preferred.
