Summary of Position            The Board of Directors of the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is seeking a visionary and highly-effective leader to serve as its next President/CEO.  MOSI is the largest science center in the Southeastern United States and is dedicated to advancing public interest, knowledge, and understanding of science, industry, and technology. The President/CEO will provide institutional and community leadership in the pursuit of MOSI’s mission; meet financial and fundraising objectives; develop and implement a strategic plan; and enhance MOSI’s visibility, impact, and reputation regionally, nationally, and internationally.

About MOSI                     MOSI is situated on 74 acres in North Tampa and features over 400,000 square feet of hands-on activities and interactive exhibitions. Offerings include the only IMAX® DOME Theatre in the state of Florida; Kids In Charge! the largest Children’s Science Center in the nation; and Mission: Moonbase, the most recent exhibit which was funded in part by NASA. MOSI’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) programs offer a wide variety of activities and workshops from pre-school to adult learners. MOSI Partnership School, a public elementary (K-5) school located on the grounds of the Museum, allows students full access to MOSI exhibits in support of the curriculum.

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, MOSI is also the winner of the 2009 National Medal for Museums by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the nation’s highest honor for museums.  MOSI employs 57 full-time and 107 part-time employees and has a budget of $9.3 million.  The land and facilities are owned by Hillsborough County and managed by the MOSI Foundation, Inc., a private, non-profit corporation. MOSI is open 365 days a year, and has an average attendance of approximately 600,000 visitors.

About Tampa                   Located on the West Coast of Florida, near the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa has a growing economy and employment profile, and is home to the 7th largest port in the nation as well as five Fortune 1000 companies.  MOSI is sited in North Tampa, the gateway to a region known for innovations in aerospace and high technology, and sits directly across from the University of South Florida, one of the country’s largest research institutions.  Cultural offerings include the Tampa Museum of Art, the Lowry Park Zoo, the Florida Aquarium, the Tampa Bay History Center, the Florida Orchestra, and several performing arts venues. Tampa has a subtropical climate with an average temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Responsibilities                The President/CEO will report to the Board of Directors and will have full authority and responsibility as the chief executive officer of MOSI. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development and implementation of a long-range strategy for MOSI to establish and maintain a sustainable business model, compelling visitor experience, strong operations, facilities, and finances; and effective  marketing/communications
  • Increasing contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations in support of MOSI’s mission and goals, and maintaining productive relationships with donors and prospects
  • Establishing and cultivating strong partnerships with groups and organizations in the Tampa community and beyond and representing MOSI to agencies, organizations, and the general public
  • Developing and maintaining sound financial practices and managing MOSI in a fiscally responsible manner within the Board-approved budget and in accordance with accepted non-profit financial accounting practices
  • Providing day-to-day leadership, management and inspiration to MOSI staff, volunteers, campus partners and tenants, and fostering a culture which attracts, motivates, and retains a high-quality, diverse staff, in accordance with federal and state laws and adopted personnel policies

  • Effective administrative and management skills; high level of initiative; creative and flexible problem solving skills supported by a record of accomplishment
  • A passion for MOSI’s mission and vision; expertise in science and technology museums is highly desired
  • An open and transparent communications style that keeps the Board of Directors informed on relevant issues in real time
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, with experience in both capital and annual giving campaigns; experience raising endowment funds desirable.
  • Record of active and successful engagement of corporate and community leaders
  • Proven effective financial management skills

Experience/Education     A minimum five years of leadership and management experience in progressively more responsible positions, preferably in a museum setting.  Possession of a Masters degree in a related field or equivalent experience is required.

Compensation                 Compensation is competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A benefits package will also be provided.
