The CU Art Museum, University of Colorado Boulder seeks a creative, scholarly, team-oriented and audience-minded Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, who will thrive in a fast-paced scholastic environment. The curator will envision a curatorial program, based in traditional art historical methodologies and risk-taking engagement strategies, for a 9,000 object teaching collection that covers diverse regions, time-periods and artistic traditions. In concert with the Director, curator organizes collection-based exhibitions, non-collection exhibitions and exhibition-specific programs. Must be excited by transcultural, cross-disciplinary and non-linear approaches. Produces adventurous public programming, scholarly essays and gallery texts and interacts with audiences on social media. The Curator conducts original research on the collections, recommends acquisitions, develops relationships with donors and collectors, and coordinates CUAM’s collections planning. Works with CUAM staff to foster faculty and student use of the collection across CU’s four campuses in curricula, extracurricular research, publishing, and inventive interpretive techniques.

What your key responsibilities will be:
40% – Exhibitions
Provide curatorial leadership and work collaboratively with others at CUAM, across campus and in the community to develop and curate rigorous exhibitions (large and small) using works of art from CUAM’s collection, as well as loaned objects that will engage existing and targeted audiences. Secure foundation, corporate, and private funding for ambitious exhibitions.
With director, develop curatorial budget and multi-year exhibition schedule.
Encourages and guides faculty curated exhibitions.
In concert with Collections department, curate and promote a series of collection-based traveling exhibitions.

30% – Collection stewardship
Conduct original research and produce scholarship related to the CUAM’s collections and related exhibitions.
Encourage and facilitate the use of CUAM’s resources and collaborative programming with CU’s faculty and students, as well as community partners. Assist faculty, students, scholars, docents, and members of the community in research of CUAM’s collections and exhibitions.
In concert with the Director and CUAM staff, assist in the development of a Collections Plan and fully participate in Collections Committee. Cultivate gift funds to support acquisitions and direct donations of artworks. Work with the CUAM staff and Collections Committee to make recommendations on new acquisitions for CUAM permanent collection, including undertaking research for attribution, provenance, interpretation, conservation etc.

30% – Outreach and education
Collaborate with CUAM staff in the creation and management of interpretive strategies, publicity materials, and public programs for a variety of audiences.
Maintain active relationships with artists, community members, lenders, donors, and professional colleagues.
Represent CUAM at regional arts initiatives and events.
Lecture on and lead tours of CUAM’s exhibitions and collections. With CUAM staff, help train student ambassadors in specific content areas and museum best practices. Assist in the launch of a student docent program.
Motivate others in experimenting with new curatorial and museum practices to support a culture of innovation and collaboration to maximize audience engagement.
Lecture and publish articles addressing the forefront of curatorial practice and field of specialization.

This position supervises graduate assistants, curatorial interns, and student assistants as needed. The CU Art Museum Director supervises this position.

Job Requirements

What we require:
•Master’s degree in Art History, Humanities, Museum Studies, or equivalent field plus three years related experience required
•Knowledge of art history, art historical methodologies and museum practices
•Demonstrated knowledge of budget applications required

What you will need:
•Ability to practice art history broadly with a specialization in an area of strength of CUAM’s collection, including and not limited to, expertise in Asian art, Ancient and Classical, and 20th Century Americas
•Organizational skills as well as demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required
