Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks, the non-profit steward of “Great Camp” Sagamore, a National Historic Landmark located in the Central Adirondack community of Raquette Lake, New York is recruiting for paid seasonal internships. Sagamore is a 27-building complex built by William West Durant between 1894 and 1897.  Sagamore, located on its own lake in the Blue Ridge Wilderness area of the Adirondack preserve was a Vanderbilt family wilderness retreat visited by the elite including writers, artists, businessmen and political figures of the early 20th century. Durant’s complex is considered one of the finest of the Adirondack “Great Camps” and is an architectural model of the National Parks Services rustic building design.

Sagamore’s internship program invites qualified applicants to join our staff for the season to work and learn in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.  Interns will perform a variety of duties but will specialize in one of the following areas:

·         Historic interpretation of Sagamore’s history and buildings

·         Trail stewardship and environmental interpretation

·         Event planning and support

·         Public Programs Supervisor

Interns will received training in their specified area as well as participate in a comprehensive training program to prepare them for leading tours and completing projects at the site.  The training seminars include presentations on American history of the late 19th and early 20th century, Adirondack environmental issues and concerns over time and museum practice and management. Interns will work on teams to complete substantive projects in support of Sagamore’s mission.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will be self-motivated and possess great leadership, organization, communications and interpersonal skills with a commitment to non-profit advocacy and cultural work. A background and record of academic achievement in relevant college coursework, strong writing skills and interest in pursuing careers in related cultural and environmental fields preferred. Trail stewards will require at least First Aid and CPR certification, additional outdoor skills like canoeing and wilderness first responder training strongly desired. Internships require a commitment from the first week of June through the second week of October, 2015.
