GENERAL SUMMARY: The Mint Museum Director of Learning & Engagement is an exceptional leader who furthers the mission of The Mint Museum by initiating and managing the museum’s innovative learning opportunities. Reporting to the President and CEO, the position oversees the areas of interpretation, educational programming, outreach, community relations, Library, and Archives. S/he initiates and supervises broad initiatives supporting excellence and equity, including but not limited to those that deepen relationships with the Latino community and better attract and serve creative teens. S/he is a key member of the Mint’s Senior Leadership team that sets priorities, establishes policies, develops budgets, and sets long-range strategic goals for the museum.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead the Mint’s interpretive, programming, and outreach efforts to provide innovative participatory learning opportunities for diverse audiences of all ages
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor the Learning and Engagement team, including professional development, for staff who oversee programs for adult, teen, family, college and K-12 (student and teacher) audiences, and under-served communities, who oversee docent tours and training for both museum locations, who conduct art instruction, who manage the Lewis Family Gallery, who manage the STAR (Student Art) Galleries at both locations, and who manage the Mint Library and Archives.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments especially Collections & Exhibitions and Advancement and Communication to coordinate programming in a fast-paced exhibition schedule in two locations and to mesh with Advancement initiatives.
  • Lead L&E staff in the museum’s current initiatives to deepen relationships with the Latino community and to better attract and serve creative teens.
  • Guide the museum as a member of the Senior Leadership team
  • Serve as a key public face of the Mint, representing the museum with excellence, and promoting the value and worth of museum education and outreach
  • Build enduring community partnerships and initiatives to support and promote access and equity
  • Supervise, support, and grow the Mint Library and Archives
  • Serve as liaison to the Learning & Engagement Committee, engaging them in advocating for, championing, and supporting the museum’s educational mission
  • Play leadership role in fundraising, including individual, foundation, government, and corporate support for the museum
  • With others, author funding proposals to support audience development, museum education, outreach, and library services
  • Promote and further the Mint’s strategic plan
  • Oversee departmental budget and budget planning
  • Serve as liaison to the Friends of the Mint, and advise the Docent and internship programs

 

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

EDUCATION:  Master’s degree in art history, art education, arts administration, museum education, fine art, museum studies, or related discipline

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:  Ten or more years of museum leadership experience, including developing and planning programs, supervising staff and volunteers, and initiating and managing many community projects. Strong team player with experience working collaboratively on interpretive projects, evaluation studies, and major renovations. Respected leader in the art museum education field with an active record of professional leadership roles, presentations, and publications.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:Demonstrate a passion for excellence and equity. Strong leadership and vision, management and mentoring skills. Ability to conceptualize, create and implement innovative projects and partnerships. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Extensive knowledge of art history, current museum teaching strategies and learning theory, and extensive public speaking experience.  Strong sense of teamwork and community.Demonstrates an understanding of the role of museum education in lifelong learning, 21st century skill-building and visual literacy. Demonstrates an understanding of the value and the role of a museum library and archives in the museum and the greater community. Demonstrates an understanding of the growing role of technology in museum education, outreach and interpretation, and its limitations

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Office Environment. Must have flexibility to work weekends and evenings on occasion.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises a staff of eight, including two departmental managers.
