ANNE LUNDER LELAND FELLOWSHIP IN CURATORIAL PRACTICE

COLBY COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART

The Anne Lunder Leland Fellowship in Curatorial Practice at the Colby College Museum of Art will support a one-year appointment to the museum, with the possibility of a renewable second year. The Fellow works with all members of museum staff, with a focus in the curatorial area.

The museum’s collection includes more than 8,000 objects with an emphasis on American art from the mid-18th century through the present, including strong holdings in modern and contemporary art. Since the 2013 opening of the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion, the museum’s facilities now encompasses 38,000 square feet of exhibition space and is the largest museum in Maine.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide curatorial support for museum’s exhibitions and related programs.
  • Assist with the organization and management of the museum’s exhibitions and publications.
  • Support and work collaboratively with all areas of the museum’s curatorial, education, and collection departments, with particular focus in the curatorial area.
  • Provide assistance with all aspects of exhibition planning, including but not limited to the preparation of checklists, loan requests, museum graphics, and exhibition labels.
  • Field inquiries regarding the collection.
  • Manage hiring and scheduling of curatorial interns.
  • Serve as the liaison for the museum’s Student Advisory Board in collaboration with the Education department.
  • Serve as a member of the Museum’s social media team, including oversight for the museum’s blog, The Lantern.
  • Conduct ongoing collections and exhibitions research as required.
  • Update new information to the museum object files in conjunction with the museum’s Registrar.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History is required with demonstrable experience
  • Highly motivated, flexible, and comfortable with diverse audiences
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with a small professional staff, students, and faculty

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Museum Director and has significant interactions with key members of the museum staff.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/ENVIRONMENT:

Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, and twisting are required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. General office and campus environment with duties that require the employee interact with faculty, staff, students, alumni, museum guests and outside vendors.
