The Martha’s Vineyard Art Association is seeking a gallery manager to oversee the daily operations of the Old Sculpin Gallery and Art School for the 2015 Season. This is a well-established cultural center on the Edgartown waterfront. This full-time position begins the week prior to Memorial Day weekend and runs through Columbus Day weekend. Responsibilities include: art sales, financial and office management, staff management, membership management. Other duties include installation of artwork, coordination of weekly openings, press for shows, and database management for inventory and customer records. The manager will delegate responsibility to other employees and MVAA members, to ensure that all of the gallery functions are taken care of. The manager is also the primary contact for artist members, the MVAA Board, customers, and the general public, so good organization and communication skills are required.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree – preferably in business or non-profit management; 3-5 years Minimum professional work experience is required; Management and/or retail sales experience-with a focus on art or design makes you a strong candidate. We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills, experience using QuickBooks and the Microsoft Office suite. Art handling experience, understanding art mediums and an ability to represent artists is important. This job requires the ability to be flexibility, to work with numerous personalities, an ability to collaborate well, have a good sense of humor, and positive attitude! Your ability to maintain a professional atmosphere that is welcoming to everyone who enters from, board members, to artist members, to patrons is expected. Marketing and PR experience a plus. A self-directed individual with the ability to delegate and complete duties in a timely fashion, with attention to detail, and work in a professional manner is wanted. Particular preference will be given to individuals with retail experience, as well as some non-profit experience (either as volunteer or professionally). Familiarity with Martha’s Vineyard is a plus. This position does not include housing.

The Martha’s Vineyard Art Association (MVAA) was established in 1954. Our mission is two-fold: To support island artist members and to support and promote art education. The MVAA also has an extensive permanent collection, that is put on display in our island gallery. Located in a historic whale oil loft on the beautiful Edgartown waterfront. We are open seasonally from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
