Position Title: Associate Director of Education

Position Description: The Associate Director of Education at the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York, NY) oversees all high school and youth programs; tours and family programs; interpretive materials; and community outreach initiatives.

The Associate Director fosters strong relationships with high school principals and teachers, community organizations, and New Museum staff to implement innovative education and outreach programs on behalf of the Museum.

The Associate Director of Education manages two full time and one part time staff dedicated to serving teen, family, community, and general public audiences. Programs range from professional development for teachers and touring programs, to weekend family workshops and audio guide development.

The Associate Director of Education also works closely with the Keith Haring Director of Education and Public Engagement on the strategic and administrative management of all department activity, such as seasonal artist residencies and programs. The position occupies a leadership role in the department related to collaboration across programming areas and works to integrate cross-departmental interests in unique, generative ways.

Working hours will be 40 hours/week,10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday <x-apple-data-detectors://1> through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekends required. The Associate Director of Education reports to the Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conceptualize, develop, and implement strategic and operational plans for high school, youth, tour, family, and community programs and interpretive materials. With the Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement, develop and implement a vision for education programming that drives active participation in New Museum activities and visitorship to the Museum in general.

Supervise staff, including the Manager of Gallery Interpretation and Academic Outreach to work closely with docents, contractual educators, and Visitor Services staff towards informative, positive visitor experiences at the Museum; and the Educator, G:Class and High School Programs to conceptualize and implement the Global Classroom (G:Class) initiative, which involves school partnerships, professional development for teachers, the Experimental Study Program, Teen Night, G:Class website, and related projects.

Also supervise and re-invigorate programs relating to community-based audiences along with a Manager of Community Programs. This position is a new initiative representing the Museum’s continued commitment to social analysis and change and tradition of leveraging contemporary arts resources for underserved populations.

Oversee the hiring and training of all teaching related staff at the New Museum for various programs.

Work closely with supervising staff to assess teaching practice at the Museum.

Coordinate collaborations between relevant Education, Curatorial, and External Affairs staff to develop exhibition-related interpretive materials including iPod audio guides, media-based content relating to exhibitions and programs, and other interpretive materials.

Work closely with staff across the Museum on implementation of programs, including staff in Security, Operations, Exhibitions, and Visitor Services. Provide reports and summaries for Development staff.

Maintain active presence in the museum education field; upkeep knowledge of scholarship related to art education and museum practices. With the Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement, develop and manage budgeting strategies for all areas of the department.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate will have 5-8 years employment experience in museum education or related field; experience managing staff, including educators and administrators; an ability to envision and execute numerous projects simultaneously; advanced knowledge of contemporary art, as well as critical, pedagogical and related theories; a commitment to work with diverse populations; and a passion for youth programs and outreach. S/he should have a demonstrated ability to manage staff; strong oral and written communications skills; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, basic photo editing; and be highly organized. The Associate Director of Education will have outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability to maintain focus on broad goals while managing day-to-day activities. The Associate Director is a leadership role in an innovative environment and department structure that not only produces interpretative programs and materials, but original artistic content as well. Previous experience required. An M.A. in a related field preferred.
