Position Title: MANAGER OF COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Position Description: The Manager of Community Programs at the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York, NY) oversees programs and accommodations for specific audience groups. This inaugural position represents the Museum’s continued commitment to social analysis and change and tradition of leveraging contemporary arts resources for underserved populations. Audiences served include those in the Museum’s neighboring communities, families, and visitors facing particular social, cultural, or economic barriers to museum involvement. Programmatic scope will entail reinvigorating existing programs and developing new programs that brings specific populations into contact with contemporary art, artists, and special project opportunities.

This is a part-time, permanent position. Occasional evenings and weekends required. This position reports to the Associate Director of Education and Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement and works closely with all departmental staff and other staff across the Museum.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Outreach to and maintain relationships with diverse community groups, including through community-based organizations, government agencies, and social service groups.

• Develop and teach innovative programming pairing New Museum’s contemporary art resources with specific audience groups. Programs may include exhibition-related programs or artist projects, and will entail both short- and long-term commitment models.

• Maintain close ties with networks of community activists and advocacy organizations to promote New Museum offerings, while seeking out potential opportunities for meaningful collaboration and engagement.

• Work across the Museum with staff, including representatives in Visitor Services, Exhibitions, Security, and Marketing, on representing the needs of different community audiences.

• Continue key Education programs and resources, such as Bowery Artist Tribute, that serve audiences unique to the Museum’s neighborhood. Seek creative connections to existing New Museum programming engaged in community relationship building at large.

• Represent the needs and interests of various, diverse community groups to the Education Department and Museum at large.

• Act as manager and educator of programs involving community-based audiences; administrate all program needs, including scheduling, budgeting, evaluation, reporting, etc.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate will have a minimum of 2-3 years related experience working in a relevant community-based position; have a strong history of engaging with diverse populations through programming or other services; and care passionately about issues of social justice in a contemporary urban setting. Candidate must also have excellent teaching and project management experience; oral and written communications and research skills; and be highly organized and self-directed. MA in related field preferred or equivalent experience in fields of advocacy or community activism.
