Job Description

The Clark Art Institute seeks a dynamic professional to act as interim curator of its world-renowned paintings and sculpture collection beginning late summer or early fall 2015. Working with the Director of Collections and Exhibitions, this twelve to eighteen-month position will oversee curatorial functions for the painting and sculpture collections. The interim Curator of Paintings and Sculpture will review and recommend requests for loans; propose and oversee changes in gallery displays as needed due to outgoing or incoming loans, etc.; and write and review label copy and multimedia guide content for all such installations. In addition, the curator will coordinate upcoming exhibitions related to paintings and sculpture, including a major exhibition of 16th and 17th-century European paintings from the Museo del Prado, Madrid, scheduled for summer 2016. Additional duties include: participate and assist with a full range of departmental activities including planning and implementation of public and special programs related to the permanent collection and exhibitions, advancement activities, supervising student interns, and other ongoing duties.

Job Requirements

This position reports to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions. The successful candidate will have a PhD in the History of Art with a specialty in European paintings; broad knowledge of Renaissance through late nineteenth-century art; reading knowledge of French and Italian; and museum experience working within a curatorial department.
