Reporting to the Publisher, the Associate Editor is primarily responsible for editing manuscripts and copy for exhibition and permanent collection catalogues, as well as brochures, labels, didactics, signage, educational and miscellaneous printed and electronic materials according to required schedules and recognized standards.

Some duties include: edits and proofreads exhibition catalogues and other museum publications, with an emphasis on copy-editing, stylistic technical editing, and fact-checking, as well as back matter; edits other in-house printed materials, in consultation with the museum’s other departments, including graphics, education, curatorial and collections, and marketing; tracks the elements, costs, and schedules of multiple projects as needed; consults editors, writers, and museum staff as needed to evaluate demands of each individual project; verifies facts, dates, and statistics; researches, writes, copy edits, and proofreads text for articles and listings, establishing and insuring consistent style in both tone and treatment of text (grammar, spelling, typographic treatment, punctuation); marks up manuscripts and galley proofs using standard typesetter’s notations; works with other museum departments to develop and maintain guidelines for LACMA house style; writes or revises elements including headlines and captions according to publication requirements; confers with author regarding changes made to copy.

The qualified candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or Art History, and at least two years of book editing experience. Firm command of scholarly publishing practices, Chicago Manual of Style guidelines, and standard typesetters’ notations is required.
