Manager of Education
Reporting to: Vice President of Programs and Exhibitions

Purpose: Managing education programs (school groups, afterschool, staff training, teacher development, and education components of the museum’s programs and events.

Principal Responsibilities Include
·      Act as ambassador to public and private school systems in order to increase museum education business (attend meetings and outreach events)

  • Oversee education office staff of part-time educators, associates, and administrative staff
  • Observe, evaluate, and oversee training of educational programs and lessons
  • Serve as the Museum’s senior instructor and train docents and other museum instructors in exhibit interpretation
  • Develop and implement selected programs for the general public (Children, youth and adults)
  • Write narratives and related budget for education related grants
  • Serve on the exhibitions team re: educational methods and objectives
  • Evaluate content and quality of museum offerings.
  • Serves as Camp Director for  summer camp program

·      Participate in staff meetings
·      other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Education, Museum Education, or equivalent experience
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary learning
  • Able to integrate current learning standards (Common Core and Blueprint for teaching and Learning in the Arts) in curriculum planning.
  • Skilled and experienced teacher (classroom/informal learning)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Well organized
  • Possess excellent skills in writing and public speaking
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Good  a team player and project leader
  • Valid Driver’s License and automobile

Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, Outlook and Excel, Experience in Altru a plus.

About the Organization:
The Staten Island Museum is Staten Island’s oldest cultural institution, and the only remaining general interest museum in New York City. The Museum’s holdings are formally organized into three main collections: (1) Natural Sciences, (2) Fine Art and (3) History Archives & Library. In addition to its original building located just two blocks from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Staten Island’s “hometown” museum is operating its Art Conservation Studio and the Staten Island History Center & Archives at Snug Harbor Cultural Center. The Museum’s next capital expansion (Building A, a triple-landmarked 1879 sailor’s dormitory) will open in the fall of 2015 adding over 18,000 square feet for new exhibitions featuring its permanent collection, a classroom and auditorium.
