SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The horticulturalist is primarily concerned with providing a high quality visitor experience through maintaining and practicing High professional standards for the horticultural care and display of the Museum’s live plant collection. She/he is responsible For the daily horticultural care of the plant collection ensuring a healthy aesthetically pleasing display of plants that meets the Needs of the Butterfly Garden as well as other Museum exhibits and programs. The horticulturalist assists in the training of volunteers and part-time staff. She/he monitors United States Dept. of Agriculture containment protocols and equipment Promptly reporting problems to the curators and the Facility Department. Monitors animal health and reports problems Promptly to the live animal curators. As a member of the Living Collections Dept. develops and presents plant/natural history Oriented interpretations and programs and actively engages visitors on these topics. In the absence of the curators the Horticulturalist becomes responsible of the operation of the Butterfly Garden.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains 600 square feet of planters featuring semi-tropical and tropical butterfly nectar plants.
  • Maintains two 500 square feet plant propagation spaces. One a year round indoor space the other a seasonal outdoor space.
  • Makes daily plant health and pest inspections and creates a weekly Integrated Pest Management Update.
  • Propagates and cares for approximately 1000 plants on an annual basis.
  • Assists in general cleaning and maintenance the Butterfly Garden a 2200 square foot permanent exhibit on butterfly and plant biology.
  • Assists in monitoring approximately 500 sq. ft. of green walls.
  • Assists in monitoring visitor interactions (upwards of 800 visitors on a daily basis) with the plant and butterfly collection.
  • Assists in interpreting the living collection to upwards of 800 visitors on a daily basis.
  • Maintains horticultural records that are current and accurate.
  • Contributes in the planning and presentation of 2-3 special events, programs or exhibits each year.
  • The Living Collections Department is a 7 day a week, 365 days a year operation requiring work on holidays and weekends.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is full-time, 35 hours/week, Sunday through Thursday, 9am – 5pm (With summer scheduling potentially being 11am – 7pm, to reflect extended Museum hours).
REPORTS TO:

Manager, Living Collections

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years or more of horticultural experience maintaining and propagating plants in a botanical garden, conservatory, zoo, museum or nature center.
  • Working experience in all aspects of plant culture including watering, fertilization, pruning, pest management and plant propagation (Acct. 1,2)
  • Ability to create and maintain aesthetically pleasing plant displays. (Acct. 1)
  • Ability to maintain current and accurate horticultural records. (Acct. 1)
  • Demonstrated ability working with the public in a very busy setting (Acct. 3,4)
  • Demonstrated public speaking ability both one on one or with small groups of visitors (Acct. 3)
  • Ability to work in a warm (78-82 degrees), humid(60-70% relative humidity) environment

STARTING SALARY:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). Commensurate with experience.
