A unique opportunity to conceive and develop the educational program at a new regional art museum. The January 2013 opening of the museum located at 1601 Rogers Avenue in the heart of Fort Smith marked a major turning point for Fort Smith. The Director of Education is a key member of the staff involved in all aspects of developing and implementing the institution’s educational and programming activities. Exhibition interpretation, curriculum development, audience outreach, docent training, proven ability to conceptualize innovative public programs are viewed as essential components of the role. This individual must work cooperatively and creatively, ensuring that the overall institutional goals are maintained, programs are effectively conceived and executed.

The Director of Education ensures that all interpretive and educational programs are enjoyable and accessible for the broadest and most diverse public, and that educational programs are of uniformly high quality. The Director of Education works closely with the Executive Director to promote the unique resources of the institution, including outreach and audience development.

Job Requirements

Conceive, develop, and implement educational programming for the Museum including, but not limited to family days, classes, exhibition education strategies, workshops, classes, lectures, films, panel discussions, special events. Manage docents and interns who are devoted to the Museum’s outreach effort. Develop and implement a wide variety of interpretive and didactic and other exhibition related educational materials. Serve as an institutional liaison with schools, museums, supporters of educational initiatives and other partners and to secure long-term relationships to enhance museum education and outreach.

Evaluate all exhibition materials with the goal of bringing clarity, accessibility, and excitement to these interpretive tools while preserving the curatorial perspective. Manage the creation of innovative educational components and materials in the galleries. Oversee docent and internship programs to ensure the highest quality programs are incorporated into the Museum’s public offerings. Maintain contact with various educational resources for the purpose of promoting school programs and developing collaborative efforts.

Develop educational programs for local schools and utilize regional instructor networks for part-­time faculty Education Specialist must be prepared to work evenings and weekend hours. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Some essential physical functions include, moderate lifting, carrying, stooping and bending, as most programmed events and classes call for set up and distribution of materials.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizes and supervises internship and docent programs. Organizes and supervises class programs, including instructors, scheduling, and materials management.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Candidate must possess strong teaching, organizational, time management and communication skills

Experience in a museum environment preferred Excellent writing/editing skills

Ability to interact with general public/professionalism a must Ability to adhere to deadlines

Mid to above average knowledge of PC and Macintosh operating systems

EDUCATON and/or EXPERIENCE

BA required with 5 years of experience in an informal learning environment.  Supervision of education and education-­related experience in an art museum setting, developing education programs, materials, and outreach activities preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to speak and write English fluently
