Job Description

OVERVIEW

This position oversees operations, collections, and programming at the museum’s historic property, Oldfields, and its associated outbuildings, as well as Westerley, residence of the IMA’s executive director and CEO and the collection at the Miller House and Garden in Columbus, Indiana.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manage the day-to day activities for successful operations of Oldfields and Westerley.
  • Manage the collections at each historic property including maintaining the physical inventory of the objects, updating the catalogue records to reflect accurate object data, measurements, and condition reports; organizing logistics of shipping acquisitions and loans; maintaining the documentation related to the collections such as Deeds of Gift, Loan Agreements and Temporary Receipts; and painting numbers on accessioned objects according to best practices.
  • Direct needed conservation and preservation treatments, as well as basic housekeeping and basic facilities management.
  • Assist Conservation with environmental and pest monitoring in display and storage areas.
  • Implement permanent and temporary exhibit design and installation as determined by curatorial
  • Assist audience engagement department with developing and implementing educational and cultural programs.
  • Work with curatorial to develop historic collections as appropriate to support interpretive goals
  • Supervise appropriate staff at historic properties
  • Serve as training resource for IMA docents
  • Coordinate activities of architects, designers, contractors, and decorators.
  • Work cooperatively with IMA departments, including curatorial, public programs, events, guest services, conservation, and registration, in formulating and implementing policies and programs
  • Develop and administer budget for historic properties.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Education

Degree in decorative arts, art history, historic preservation, museum studies, or related field.

Experience

General knowledge of European and American decorative arts, architecture, and design of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Administrative experience as an historic property professional. Minimum of 3 to 5 years proven achievement in collections oversight and organization. Proven experience in managing historic sites, including 1 to 2 years of supervisory experience.

Language Skills

High comfort level in dealing with the public and media.

Excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills
