Public Affairs Specialist

(Head of Public Affairs and Marketing)

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery together form the Smithsonian’s museums of Asian art. The galleries are devoted to the research, acquisition, exhibition, care and management of the renowned collections of Asian art in each museum and American art in the Freer Gallery. The mission of the Galleries is to encourage enjoyment and understanding of the arts of Asia and the cultures that produced them, and to use works of art to inspire study and provoke thought. The two museums are co-administered and share the same staff.

The Head of Public Affairs and Marketing oversees public communications, marketing, media relations and public engagement strategies for the Freer|Sackler. The incumbent leads a three member team in the development and implementation of communications plans and other initiatives to raise the museum’s profile, visitorship, and the quality and quantity of media coverage. The unit seeks to increase awareness of the Freer|Sackler’s mission and activities, position the museum positively nationally and internationally, and support the department of Public and Scholarly Engagement in its strategic goals of audience engagement, audience growth and diversification. The position reports to the Head of Public and Scholarly Engagement and works closely with the Director of External Affairs.

The Head of Public Affairs and Marketing interacts with the museum’s senior management and with departments across the museum to develop creative and innovative ways to present the museum to a variety of audiences. The position requires a strong background and experience in communications and marketing, a network of cultural media contacts, outstanding oral and written communication skills, experience with multi-platform promotions, a desire to work beyond the traditional boundaries of a press office, supervisory experience, and an ability to work in a complex institutional setting. The salary range is $76,378 – $99,296 per year.
