DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Art Preparator oversees and monitors all aspects of the Permanent Collection both on-site and off-site; collaborates with Curators and the Senior Registrar for Collections to ensure the care and preservation of the collection; and assists Albright-Knox staff and outside researchers requiring access to works in the Collection.

  • Collaborates with the Senior Registrar for Collections to assess and execute all aspects of collection care.
  • Assists with the moving, packing and unpacking, receiving and releasing of permanent collection artworks for in-house use and for loan to other institutions.
  • Assists the Senior Registrar for Collections and curators with the prioritization of works for conservation and, when necessary, makes these available for treatment.
  • Monitors all permanent collection galleries on a daily basis.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Registrar for Collections on all collection-based institutional initiatives and grant-related projects.
  • Collaborates with the registrar for collections to oversee and maintain the off-site storage facility through effective space planning.
  • Oversees and maintains all on-site storage vaults for safety and easy access.
  • Maintains accurate storage inventory with the Senior Registrar for Collections.
  • Assists with the preparation of the permanent collection for on-site and special touring exhibitions and travel, as a courier, when necessary.
  • Partner with Buildings and Grounds, when necessary, to organize the shipping and receiving area of the museum to ensure the safe movement of all works of art.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Art Preparation to supervise other art prep staff and free-lance registrars.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Art Preparation to manage the installation and de-installation of special exhibitions.
  • Other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong team player.
  • Ability to assist outside contractors and visiting artists, curators and conservators.
  • Highly organized with strong time management techniques and attention to detail
  • Good judgment and decision making skills
  • Ability to lead and manage projects from beginning to end
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Results-driven, energetic, and dedicated to task
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends and overtime

 EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Five years plus experience in museum/gallery setting.
  • Impeccable art installation and art handling skills.
  • Applicable experience in the preparation of art objects for exhibition and loan.
  • Ability to use varied hand tools; knowledge of art processes and materials.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software
