About the Museum:

Located on the grounds of the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, the American Saddlebred Museum is a non-profit organization exempt from tax under Code Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.   The Museum boasts the largest collection of Saddlebred artifacts in the world complete with trophies, photographs, tack and artwork, including one of the most extensive collections of George Ford Morris Saddlebred artwork.  Its research library contains over 3,000 volumes used by our members for bloodline and genealogical research.  The Museum also educates tens of thousands of visitors annually about the beauty, versatility and history of the American Saddlebred horse.

General Overview and Responsibilities

The Executive Director will be a confident leader, bridge builder and engaging team player with gravitas and strong business acumen.  He/She will possess the clarity of vision and operational savvy required to anticipate and leverage opportunities and provide workable solutions to challenges.  Equally important is his/her ability to channel their passion for the mission and vision of the American Saddlebred Museum into effective and inspiring communications to various constituencies and stakeholders.  Therefore, the Executive Director shall be responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the Museum.  This involves developing, recommending and executing the approved strategic plan, as well as the general management of the staff, facilities and operating budget.  The Executive Director will report to, and work closely with, the Board of Trustees to advance the Museum’s vision and mission, identifying and securing the necessary resources, and delivering specific objectives of the Museum in accordance with its mission.  This person will play a significant role in fundraising and developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with stakeholders.  Primary duties of the Executive Director are to:

  • Hire, manage and assist staff;
  • Create, monitor, and reconcile budgets;
  • Represent Museum at all community or trade-related events;
  • Maintain and cultivate relationship with The Kentucky Horse Park;
  • Oversee financial systems and accounting functions;
  • Direct preparations for the annual audit;
  • Handle banking, including reconciliation of monthly statements;
  • Administer insurance policies and lead the annual renewal process;
  • Support the Board in its governance by:
    • Organizing and preparing agendas
    • Scheduling and convening Board and committee meetings
    • Maintaining records
    • Researching issues and disseminating information to Trustees
    • Implementing Board decisions

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the American Saddlebred or show horse industry;
  • Minimum of seven years in a museum, nonprofit organization or business entity. At least five of those years in a senior managerial capacity;
  • Minimum education requires a Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
  • Working knowledge of fiscal management, including fund accounting and budgeting;
  • Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget; strong business management skills;
  • Computer experience with web-based applications a plus;
  • Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction. Experience developing and implementing strategic plans;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, non-profits, or similar
  • organizations or corporations;
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking;
  • Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills. Working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, email, calendar/scheduling and word processing software;
  • Willingness to work a variable, fulltime schedule—Including weekends and evenings when needed and travel;
  • Experience in fundraising and marketing;
  • Must reside or be willing to move to the Lexington, Kentucky area.
