Kress Interpretive Fellow

Description:
The Worcester Art Museum (WAM) seeks an exceptional fellow in museum interpretation.  The nine-month position, supported by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, will focus on developing interpretive strategies for the museum’s outstanding collections of medieval and Renaissance art, including works from the Higgins collection of arms and armor, to be reinstalled in 2016-17. The fellow will report to the Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of European Art, but the work will be guided by a cross-divisional group of curators and educators and will include collaboration with the Museum’s exhibition designer and team of conservators. In recent years, the Museum has been exploring new strategies of presentation and interpretation, most notably in the 2013 [remastered] reinstallation of 17th-century European paintings and the 2014 exhibition Knights! The strategic objective is to welcome new audiences in greater numbers with universally accessible, family-friendly, visitor-focused environments. The fellow’s work will be guided by what has been learned through these experiments, and an important emphasis will be the family and college undergraduate audiences. The Kress Fellow will collaborate with the project team in preparing interpretive content for the galleries, delivered in various forms, including enhanced iPad interpretation, and assist with the development of the installation. The fellow will contribute to docent training and be expected to interact with all levels of audiences in the galleries. Visitor research, including ongoing collaboration with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) students, will also be an important part of the fellow’s work. The Kress Fellow will develop study instruments, survey tools, and evaluate feedback relative to WAM’s audience engagement objectives, as well as apply the knowledge already gained from the Museum’s work in this arena.
Qualifications:
By the start of the fellowship, the candidate should have completed a B.A. degree in museum studies, art history, history, or a related field. The candidate should expect a broad introduction to interpretation at a museum rather than a focused research experience.  Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, are expected, and the following skills are desirable: knowledge of current practices in the development of visitor-oriented exhibits; fluency in applying digital resources to learning; and familiarity with museum work or object-based learning.  Broad knowledge of European art history is highly desirable.  Compensation will include benefits extended to full-time temporary employees. The fellow is expected to be on-site full time, 5 days a week.
How To Apply:
Qualified candidates please send a resume, a letter of interest, and a brief writing sample to the Director of Human Resources, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA, 01609, or email documents to humanresources@worcesterart.org.  Early applications are encouraged.  We pledge to conduct a confidential search.  The Worcester Art Museum is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity.
