Mission

Scope of Position

The Director of Marketing reports to the Deputy Director and works closely with the Director and key members of the DMA’s Board of Trustees (Board) to establish the brand and fulfill the mission of the institution as “a responsible steward of cultural heritage and a trusted advocate for the essential place of art in the lives of people locally and around the globe.”

The Director of Marketing is responsible for promoting the DMA and its programs to audiences in North Texas and around the world. The Director of Marketing has a deep enthusiasm and appreciation for the mission and aspirations of the DMA, and the capability to eloquently articulate the DMA’s mission, values, achievements, potential, and priorities to internal and external audiences.

The position oversees marketing and advertising, for exhibitions, public program, social media, graphic design, and the Museum Store and aligns their efforts to the Museum’s Strategic Plan and will steward and maintain the global brand of the DMA.

The Director of Marketing manages the staff, resources, and activities of the Marketing Division, participates broadly as a senior member of the Museum’s staff and as a member of the Museum’s Management and Budget Team. The Director of Marketing is a visible presence in the Dallas community and a strategic partner to the senior staff and Board; and a motivated self-starter with an entrepreneurial drive and creative disposition to generate new ideas and strategies to build a dynamic, comprehensive marketing program.

Essential Functions:

The following are the key functions of the Director of Marketing position:

  • Provide dynamic leadership and direction for the Marketing Division – which includes Marketing, Creative Services, Social Media and the Museum Store – to build the brand of the Museum and strong relationships with its visitors and stakeholders, communicating personal value through participation.
  • Work with the Deputy Director and other senior staff to develop, prioritize, communicate, and implement marketing strategies that meet or surpass budgetary, attendance, and other defined institutional objectives each year.
  • Develop and oversee all print and electronic marketing collateral and campaigns, social media, e-mail communication, on-site and other signage, ensuring that all reflect the brand, visual and narrative style of the DMA.
  • Partner with the Director of Creative Services to guide the graphic look of the Museum’s materials, signage and website that is consistent with the DMA brand.
  • Oversee the purchase, design and placement of external media and advertising in addition to track responses to utilize staff and financial resources in a cost effective manner.
  • Work closely with external partners, creative agencies, and media buyers to secure the best services and media placement on behalf of the Museum.
  • Transform the Museum’s social media platform to be one that fosters community, invites exchange and opens dialogue with the DMA’s many constituencies by developing rich, varied and suitable content, as warranted, for Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest and other in-bound marketing platforms.
  • Partner with staff responsible for enterprise activities, such as box office, retail store, and café, to promote and enhance the performance of each area. In particular, seek to increase the sale of special exhibition and public program tickets, retail merchandise, café products, and external catering services.
  • Work closely with Museum staff in Development to ensure member communications are aligned and working effectively across all communication channels.
  • Negotiate and secures corporate and media sponsorships that are of real value to sponsors and contribute to the DMA’s bottom line as part of a team.
  • Promote the Museum regionally, nationally, and globally, raising the profile of the DMA as one of the world’s premier encyclopedic museums in conjunction with the senior staff, management staff, curators, educators, other staff and trustees.
  • Develop institutional relationships with Dallas Arts District neighbors, corporations, and other community organizations to expand the DMA’s reach into the region.
  • Manage the Marketing Division’s budget to ensure its effective and efficient use of resources to support institutional goals of the DMA.
  • Develop and maintain a concise set of metrics concerning the impact of marketing initiatives that will be used to drive decision-making on a weekly basis by departmental staff, senior staff of the DMA, and for reporting to the Board.

  • Collaborative skills necessary to gain the trust and confidence of the Deputy Director, Director, Trustees, Staff, and other stakeholders and inspiring them to productive collaboration.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills to prepare collaterals, make presentations and interact with the public in ways that convey information effectively and make a compelling case for participation with the Museum.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to mentor and effectively guide the work of teams.
  • Ability to plan, develop, monitor and manage significant, detailed budgets and analyze trends and statistics.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with proven ability to stay on schedule and budget.
  • Ability and inclination to read, collect information and remain abreast of new and best practices in marketing outreach strategies.

Education, Experience and Certification:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree or professional training in marketing preferred.
  • A minimum of seven years progressively responsible experience in marketing and in supervisory or management positions with prior experience in a cultural organization preferred.
  • Experience in developing and leading a comprehensive marketing program that includes traditional and digital approaches. Proven success in integrating digital strategies with traditional brand experience and promotion is required.
  • Financial literacy, with an understanding of numbers and ability to track, analyze, and share financial data in an accurate, timely and comprehensible way.
