Job Description

As a nonprofit, forty percent of Vesterheim’s operating budget comes from donations. The American Alliance of Museum indicates sixty percent is the goal. This goal, in addition to embarking on a campaign in the next year or two, requires an individual with five to seven years fundraising experience, including experience with capital campaign management. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) works closely with the President/CEO, the Development Staff, and the Board of Trustees and must be deeply committed to the mission of Vesterheim and be a spokesperson for its needs. The candidate must be able to effectively communicate Vesterheim’s goals, mission, history and vision for the future. Through both verbal and written communication the CDO must be able to motivate prospects to make financial and leadership commitments. The CDO shall be responsible for all aspects of institutional resource development including planning, preparing budgets, management and implementation of all development activities. These comprehensive activities include the implementation of a strategic approach to: Board Campaigns, Major Gifts, Endowments, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Membership, Events, Direct Mail Appeal(s), In-Kind Resources, and Planned Giving.
