The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to the practice and understanding of photography and the reproduced image in all its forms. Through our exhibitions, school, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the role images play in our culture. Since our founding, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level.

ICP is a center where photographers and artists, students and scholars can create and interpret the world of the image.

SUMMARY: This position is located in our NYC, NY nad Jersey CIty, NJ Locations

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Exhibitions, Collections & Research is a key member of the Executive Management Team, which is charged with advancing the mission of the Museum and developing, implementing, and monitoring its goals and strategies. The incumbent is responsible for leadership and management of the Curatorial and Collections Departments. The incumbent sets both the tone and substance of the exhibition program broadly by creatively utilizing the collection to engage, educate, and expand participation.  S/he works collaboratively, both internally and externally, with the overall goals of enlivening the institution and broadly growing its reputation. Collectively the curatorial department focuses on advancing the Museum’s mission.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Including those partially delegated to subordinate staff):

  • Actively engaged in the development and implementation of strategic plan and other institutional planning efforts.
  • Recommend and develop the Center’s exhibition program, including project initiation and management of curatorial research, design, and production of exhibitions, traveling exhibitions, and related publications.
  • Contributes to a values – based culture by providing leadership and demonstrating and requiring adherence to the highest ethical standards.
  • Assures that the exhibition themes and ideas set forth are presented professionally, with attention to both quality and detail, in a timely and efficient manner and within budget parameters.
  • Works collaboratively with the 250 Bowery Programming Director and interdepartmental exhibitions and public program teams to ensure that the museum programs reflect ICP’s mission and vision.
  • Develop and manage ICP’s public programs, including museum education related to the exhibitions and collection.
  • Supervise the curatorial, collections management, and exhibition production and administrative staff.
  • Works collaboratively and as a supervisor with individual curators to strengthen exhibition concepts; monitors the evolution of each exhibition to maximize public impact.
  • Occasionally serves as exhibition curator.
  • Develop and manage program strategies for expanding the breadth and the engagement of ICP’s audience such as accessible and user-friendly language, engaging technology, and content that is relevant to general visitors.
  • Actively participate in donor cultivation and fundraising efforts and work with the Executive Director, Development and other departments to make funding requests and to ensure that program information is developed for fundraising purposes, and that all fundraising opportunities are fully exploited.
  • Implement and oversee interdepartmental coordination for public program planning.
  • Oversee and maintain ICP’s Collections Management Policy, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure safe art handling and compliance with curatorial best practices as well as NY State law and regulation.
  • Draft and manage the department’s budget. Ensure that the department is managed efficiently and actively seeks to control costs and increase income.
  • Participate in public lectures, publications, and events.

Job Requirements

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend meetings of the Board of Trustees.
  • Keeps trustees and trustee committees fully informed on exhibition plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Lead a curatorial team that recommends collection acquisitions for Director’s and Acquisition Committee’s approval.
  • Manage the Exhibitions and Acquisitions Committee meetings, serving as staff for the committee chairs.
  • Manage collaborations with outside curators.
  • Additional responsibilities as may be assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least ten years or more senior curatorial or museum management experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing imaginative and innovative exhibitions on complex subjects designed to appeal to broad audiences
  • Flexibility and proven ability to manage multiple projects
  • Evident commitment to building on ICP’s “concerned photograph” legacy.
  • Keen appreciation of the museum visitor and of the qualities and strategies that ensure a rich and rewarding visitor experience.
  • Senior experience in planning and budgeting management
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge of art, culture, and humanities.
  • Highly motivated, organized and detail oriented.
  • Able to create exhibitions that inspire and motivate visits and attract support and professional recognition.
  • Experience and success in raising program support and funding
  • Working knowledge of and comfort with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
