Manager of Interpretation

JOB PURPOSE:

The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University seeks a highly collaborative, experienced educator to craft dynamic and engaging interpretive strategies and programs for its exhibitions and permanent collection galleries. Reporting to the Associate Director for Academic and Public Engagement, the Manager of Interpretive Programs will think broadly about collections interpretation, the role of public tours, K-12 tours, and exhibitions programming, exploring ways to offer new and diverse perspectives on art for our visitors. The MIP will provide leadership for the museum’s large and growing corps of docents, while working closely with the Cantor’s curatorial staff, the Education Programs Associate, the Family Programs Coordinator, the Student Engagement Coordinator, and the Curator for Collections Engagement. As an educator in a research and teaching museum at a major University, this position will interact collaboratively with students and faculty in addition to communities beyond the campus.
CORE DUTIES*:

  • Lead the planning and operations for functions or programs that may have significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise.
  • Evaluate programs, policies and procedures. Identify issues, and develop alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures.
  • Review and analyze trends to advise and develop recommendations to achieve or modify the goals of the program or function.
  • Represent the program or function within the department, unit or school. May also represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external constituencies.
  • Develop outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications and compliance.

Specific roles and responsibilities include:
50% Public tour programs

  • Manages docent program
  • Trains new docents and continuing docents on special exhibitions/rotations (in collaboration with ADAPE)
  • Update training methods, protocols, guidelines based on new research
  • Research, write, compile new training guide to the CAC collection
  • Anderson collection: manage training program on Anderson, work closely with Anderson staff

30% Exhibitions

  • Review exhibitions materials and work with curators on exhibitions texts
  • Lead the planning of exhibitions programming
  • Oversee and work with the Education Programs Associate on public program event logistics
  • Manage communications with guest speakers, campus collaborators, etc.
  • Manage PR to community and campus stakeholders/audiences on an exhibition-by-exhibition basis

10% K-12 School program

  • Oversee outreach to schools
  • Implement school tour offerings
  • Teacher’s Workshops

10% Developmental projects as needed including visitor experience improvements, printed materials, Family Programs

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience in a museum or educational setting, or combination of education and relevant experience. MA/PhD in art history or related humanities discipline preferred. Experience with exhibitions programming, teaching with art collections and training docents highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
