POSITION:          School Programs Manager

REPORTS TO:    Director of Education

Scope

The School Programs Manager creates, implements, and evaluates programs and materials for K–12 students and teachers who use the museum as a resource. Working with the Director of Education, the position sets the long-range goals for the growth of school programs in the museum, determines priorities and assesses offerings for school-age participants, and supervises part-time, seasonal staff interpreters (who function as both gallery instructors and tour coordinators). The position is responsible for developing collaborative relationships with teachers and administrators in Maryland public and private schools, basing such collaborations on shared goals and fiscal viability. The Manager develops and oversees the Bus Scholarship program, promoting the scholarships, fielding requests, and working with the Education & Reservations Specialist to coordinate visits. The School Programs Manager leads school-based tours as time permits and plays a vital role in the Education Department’s intellectual life by collaborating on special exhibition teams, teacher workshops, and new program development. The position also works with Curatorial, Communications and other departments and administrative staff throughout the Museum to conceptualize, develop, execute, and publicize events and program materials.

Job Requirements

Basic Skills:

The successful candidate has an M.A. degree in education, history, museum education, or a related field in the humanities or social sciences. At least two years of teaching experience, planning and implementing relevant and creative education programs for K–12 students and teachers is required. Knowledge of museum education theory and practice desirable. Excellent research, analytical, writing, and presentation skills are critical. Experience with project and personnel management and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with Museum staff, patrons, and representatives of other community-based organizations are essential. The individual must be capable of undertaking multiple projects simultaneously and balancing long- and short-term priorities. Interest and ability in budget management and resource development are vital. Knowledge of STEM, Common Core and other current curricular standards and framework is preferred. Open and experimental practice is a plus.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

1. Implementing, expanding and evaluating CBMM’s school programs, including tours, hands on programs, camps for school-age participants and teacher workshops, and developing new programming that aligns with current educational best practices and CBMM’s mission.

2.  Development, management, recruitment, training and oversight of CBMM seasonal staff interpreters.

3.  Development and management of the Bus Scholarship program, working with school systems to promote participation, fielding scholarship requests, and working with the Education & Reservations Specialist to coordinate visits.

4. Working with the Director of Education and the Preservation & Interpretation Department to develop opportunities for school programming that reflects changing exhibits, to create new online and on site educational content inspired by those exhibits.

5. Assuming such other duties as are necessary for the operation of the Museum or as assigned by the President.

This position is a termed, part-time, hourly position of the Museum averaging 15 hours per week, increasing to full time, June 2016. All staff is expected to be available to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.

The School Programs Manager is expected to be present for all special events/advancement functions unless otherwise arranged with the President and may be assigned to work in a capacity alternate to that defined.
