The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is looking for a strategic, impactful, and creative leader to join the Museum’s team as a Director of Human Resources (HR) Programs in Washington, D.C. The Director of HR Programs is a collaborative change leader who partners with the Museum’s senior executive team to create a human capital strategy for the organization that furthers the Museum’s Strategic Plan. The primary goals of this position are to: help leadership align organizational and people capabilities with the Museum’s Strategic Plan and needs, maximize employee engagement, and drive a robust organizational climate to attract, develop, and retain the right talent to the public/private partnership organization. The Director will lead and implement human resources programs, policies, and services and broad human capital initiatives to build and engage the workforce while sustaining a high performance culture.

The Director will lead the Human Resources Division, within the Office of Museum Operations and Administration. The HR Division is comprised of a team of professionals who provide a wide range of services to the Museum’s 400+ workforce (comprised of privately funded and Federal employees) including talent acquisition, workforce planning, benefits administration, 403(b) plan administration, employee development, and employee relations. This is a full-time donated position (non-Federal) paid with the Museum’s private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.

DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establishes a vision and leads human capital strategies and HR services, including plans, policies, and systems to support the mission of the Museum.
  • Operates as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, providing advice and counsel to the Museum Director, Chief Museum Operations Officer, and all members of the executive team on organizational and management issues.
  • Drives a transformation of the human resources organization to ensure that the Museum acquires, retains, and develops the best talent to achieve its strategic goals. The HR Director will be a champion of the Museum’s culture, and foster an environment that is collaborative and performance-driven.
  • Leads the strategy for the development of a robust workforce plan for the long term future of the organization; benchmarks the broader industry to stay current on trends affecting the talent pipeline.
  • Leads the talent acquisition process of all employees to ensure a talented, diverse, engaged workforce who can deliver on the Museum’s mission. Examines employment needs in the organization, develops and implements proactive talent acquisition strategies, guides and supports hiring managers in interview and selection, and provides support and analysis in the development of employment offers.
  • Cultivates a holistic approach to drive employee development and performance and shapes a strategy to continually improve its effectiveness. Ensures that the approach is implemented well and takes into account the differing needs of employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Guides the employee relations program to establish a positive employee-employer relationship and promote a high level of employee engagement and accountability.
  • Provides direction to the HR staff in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities, and achieving management initiatives. This also includes seeking continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of HR services.
  • Accountable for outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years or more of proven leadership experience managing an HR department; experience within a nonprofit or commercial organization is required.
  • Demonstrated success serving as a strategic HR partner, with a commitment to customer needs in a mid-sized organization; experience implementing a vision as a change leader.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with exceptional coaching, communications, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; impeccable business judgment and critical thinking approaches.
  • Excellent organizational ability with a demonstrated track record of managing multiple tasks and projects.
  • HR certification (SHRM) and/or a Master’s Degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Federal HR practices, regulations, and policies is valuable but not required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, PowerPoint).
