Individual Giving Officer

Description:
The Individual Giving Officer will be responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting potential and existing donors, with a focus on qualifying and upgrading New England Aquarium Annual Donors and Members. The Officer is responsible for the initial contact of newly identified prospective donors (members, annual donors and friends) to qualify and to promote interest in providing philanthropic support to the Aquarium’s programs and priorities.  In addition, the Individual Giving Officer will cultivate and solicit prospects for gifts, with an emphasis on donor development and work collaboratively with the Development team to optimize gift support.
This position will play a critical role in building the pipeline of donors for key Aquarium priorities.

SCHEDULE
This is a full time, regular position working M-F, 9:00-5:00 with occasional nights and weekends to attend Development events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fundraising/Portfolio Management 80% 1. Under the direction of the Director of Leadership Giving, the IGO enables the NEAq to build a robust pipeline donor program. This includes all aspects of fundraising activities – identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship of individual donors and related special events. These fundraising activities require continual collaboration with all members of the NEAq development team. 2. Develop initiatives to qualify, identify and solicit special gift prospects with emphasis on annual fund and membership upgrades. 3. Evaluate and recommend appropriate next steps for newly qualified potential donors. This requires assessment of prospect’s interests and knowledge of Aquarium programs to recommend most effective ways to optimize near-term and longer-term philanthropy to NEAq. 4. Work to strengthen the donor pipeline by working with the Director, Leadership Giving to develop major gift strategies for selected prospects for gifts. This may include arranging visits by or in conjunction with gift officers, leadership, etc. 5. Works closely withDirector of Special Projects and Fundraising Eventsto attend and advise on Giving Society events including the annual Navigator and Conservation Society Appreciation event, Navigator Family event, annual Gala, film previews, and other prospecting, cultivation, and solicitation events. 6. Analyze and evaluate prospect and donor data to generate targeted lists and recommend strategic next steps. 7. Communicate effectively with Development team members to enable effective coordination that supports Development’s fundraising priorities. Program Management 20% 1. Participate in Prospect Management System; file timely and accurate online contact reports. 2. Assist in staffing support groups and volunteer committees that may be created to focus on donor relations and stewardship activity.

Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Training and Experience
· Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive development experience in a complex organization. · Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including gift policies, cultivation, solicitation, donor recognition.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities · Ability to develop strategies and plans to identify and cultivate prospects and steward donors. · Knowledge of the dynamics of fundraising and the concepts of development. · Superior written and oral communication skills to prepare reports, summaries, correspondence, briefings, personalized letters, and other materials, and to dialog clearly and effectively in conversation and at meetings. · Proven ability to prioritize assignments and departmental needs, and to meet deadlines. · Ability to make sound independent judgments and complete tasks with minimum direction. · Proven experience developing new programs to broaden donor base and enhance institutional outreach. · Proven experience interacting successfully with donors, prospective donors, faculty and staff and community members. · Strong sense of ethical conduct, and demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters, including those relating to sensitive donor relations issues. · Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.
