Museum Assistant

Position Summary The Museum Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting in providing a safe and secure environment for the museum’s artwork and collections, galleries, facilities, sculpture park, visitors, and staff. This is a highly visible, front-line position with much visitor and staff interface. The Museum Assistant must maintain a standing or walking patrol at all times and is responsible for monitoring galleries, public and non-public spaces throughout the museum, and for enforcing general compliance with established safety and security policies. The Museum Assistant is additionally charged with providing information to and assisting visitors, preventing and/or reporting irregular or unauthorized situations, and maintaining visitor traffic flow as necessary during events/public programs.  Tertiary responsibilities include assisting with a variety of daily operations activities as assigned by the Head of of Visitor Services and Security, including some light physical labor.  The Museum Assistant is expected to begin no later than 9:45 am, and remain on the job until the end of day security check and walk through with the manager is complete (approximately 5: 30 pm) unless otherwise instructed. A one-half hour lunch break is included in the workday.  Weekend and occasional evening shifts are required of all Visitor Services and Events staff. Opening and closing procedures and specific tasks may vary depending upon exhibition; checklists and/or training will be provided.Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Responsible for turning on/off lights, unlocking interior and exterior doors and windows, and securing at closing; set up of process gallery, scanning galleries/artwork, and reporting any concerns encountered during procedures
  • Enforce security and safety rules and regulations; monitor galleries and public spaces (specifically: ensure that all artwork is secure, is not touched or photographed, and that there is no food, wet, or potentially damaging objects in the galleries)
  • Rapid response to emergencies and/or unfavorable situations you observed or reported by staff or visitors
  • Assist visitors by providing information, directions, and accessibility support
  • Assist with managing traffic and flow of visitors and groups in the galleries and during programs and events
  • Admit deliveries and vendors and other outside people to secure/closed areas of the museum as appropriate
  • Keep Manager(s) informed of and record incident reports, security concerns, and maintenance or exhibit issues in the specified log
  • Communicate with Head of Security and collaborate with Buildings & Grounds to help keep facility storage areas organized and stocked
  • Arrive at work on time, prepared and with a professional dress and presentation

  • Fulfill miscellaneous tasks on an as needed basis, as requested by Head of Security, Assistant Director of Visitor Services and Events, and Director of Visitor Services and Events
  • Carryout all non-security related tasks prior to museum opening (trash removal, water cooler set-up, moving furniture, cleaning/sweeping, lobby set up, etc.)
Qualifications:

  • Able to stay on feet and circulate throughout six-level space, esp. in low light conditions; navigate stairs when needed, and handle light physical labor as circumstances require
  • Security or customer service experience preferred
  • Possess sound judgment and problem solving skills; be highly observant; and have excellent tact, communication, and customer service skills
  • Ability to follow security procedures and enforce related policy
  • Capable of working with a minimum of supervision, and taking responsibility during an emergency situation
