Job Description

  • Collaborates with educators, curators, and other departments to develop participatory modes of engagement in and adjacent to MoMA’s galleries, including interactive spaces and resource areas, pop-up activities, Gallery Sessions, and artist-led initiatives.
  • Identifies goals and outcomes for participatory spaces and activities including, but not limited to, MoMA Studio, MoMA Art Lab, and Gallery Sessions to help assess participants’ learning and creative engagement.
  • Conducts formative testing of activities and observes, interviews, and surveys participants to continually refine best practices for such spaces and activities in anticipation of the Museum’s expanded campus.
  • Conducts user testing and agile evaluation of MoMA’s various digital platforms, including moma.org, MoMA Learning, Audio+, the MoMA App, and online courses.
  • Assesses the physical and intellectual accessibility of exhibitions and collection displays to inform best practices and guidelines for content development and graphic and exhibition design to ensure the best experience for a range of visitors.
  • Collaborates with Marketing and Communications, Visitor Services, Management Information, and other departments to provide a more complete and qualitative picture of visitors’ needs and experiences at the Museum and on MoMA’s various digital platforms.
  • Develops evaluation instruments and trains colleagues to help collect data for visitor studies.
  • Shares visitor research and evaluation findings through written reports, blog posts, conference presentations, and publications.
  • Makes recommendations for iterative changes to existing programs and resources and develops best practices and guidelines for future programs and resources.

Job Requirements

Master’s degree in museum studies, museum education, or related field, and five years experience working in a museum setting. Demonstrated knowledge of current museum education, interpretation and visitor research, and evaluation practices and theory. In-depth knowledge of modern and contemporary art. Excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with a diverse group of colleagues within the institution and externally. Demonstrates a high level of judgment and accountability. Demonstrated knowledge of current museum research and evaluation theories, strategies, and practice. Ability to organize and work on multiple projects simultaneously. This is a grant-funded, fixed-term position with an expected duration through August 31, 2017.
