Job Description

The Board of Trustees of the Erie Canal Museum solicits applications for the position of  Executive Director.

We seek someone who is energetic and ready to lead the Museum to new heights, taking advantage of our newly remodeled facility and rich history. The Executive Director will provide visionary leadership in all aspects of the Museum’s programs and services from day-to-day operations to strategic initiatives.  The successful candidate must be a capable leader in all key areas related to the Museum, including: strategic planning, fundraising, financial management, programming, staff management and public relations.

 

The Executive Director will report to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with community leaders and organizations to engage their involvement; establishing partnerships with public and private organizations and individuals to further the Museum’s mission and goals; attracting local, national and international visitors; and ensuring the successful housing and care of our diverse collection of artifacts and irreplaceable treasures.

 

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. Prior experience in a museum or non-profit organization and proven fundraising experience preferred. Must be able to fulfill the public obligations of the organization, including public speaking and some travel.  Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with the Board of Trustees, staff, external stakeholders, and the community.

 

The Erie Canal Museum, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is committed to preserving the only existing weighlock building in the United States. The Erie Canal Museum collects and conserves Canal material, champions an appreciation and understanding of Erie Canal history through educational programming and promotes an awareness of the Canal’s transforming effects on the past, present and future.
