Position Description: The Manager of Teen Programs is responsible for the development, oversight, and administration of out-of-school time education programs for middle and high school students. S/he must have a flexible schedule and be available to work weekday evening hours and Saturdays and Sundays as needed throughoutthe calendar year.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Oversee all out-of-school time programming for middle and high school students at the New-York Historical Society, including: Student Historians High School Internship Program including second tier internships: Teen Leaders and Family Programs Interns, Saturday Academy, Scholars Program for Teens, Teen Thursdays, and American History High School Scholars
  • Supervise and manage Associate Manager of Teen Programs as well as part-time educators assigned to lead Teen Programs
  • Plan, implement, and supervise high school internship programs: Develop and oversee effective projects and programming for Student Historian, Teen Leaders, and Family Programs internships; Directly manage the Student Historian high school interns, including managing the academic year U.S. History Regents Review project
  • Cultivate relationships with like-minded organizations and sites in New York City to plan visits and peer exchanges for interns to enrich their programming
  • Plan, implement, and supervise the Saturday Academy at the New-York Historical Society, including hiring and evaluating instructors and liaising with the program funder
  • Work with Associate Manager of Teen Programs to develop effective programming for the Scholars Program for Teens
  • Plan, implement, and supervise the Teen Thursdays program for middle school students; serve as liaison to NYCDOE Office of Curriculum, Instruction & Professional Learning and the participating partner middle schools
  • Actively engage with the NYC youth development community
  • Evaluate and revise existing programs and develop new programs for middle and high school students
  • Actively contribute to fundraising efforts for all teen programs, collaborating with the Development office and contributing to grant proposals and reports
  • Actively contribute to marketing efforts for all teens programs, including print and electronic materials as well as attending recruiting and opportunities fairs at schools and community organizations
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Education, manage all programs within a set budget
  • Represent N-YHS and Teen Programs at local and national conferences
  • Cultivate audiences for all New-York Historical Society teen programs
  • Cultivate relationships with middle and high school principals and teachers
  • Participate in the general work and programming of the Education Division as an active member of the team
  • Develop and manage other OST and Teen Programs as needed
  • Contribute ideas and expertise to development of materials and programs for middle and high school teachers and students
  • Lead student programs in the museum on an as-needed basis

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Communications department staff to expand the reach of education programs at the middle and high school level, submit content for social media accounts
  • Collaborate with Education department staff on the content and execution of periodic special events
  • Additional responsibilities as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Manager of Teen Programs supervises one full time and up to fourteen per diem staff members each year as well as the Student Historian high school interns.

  • Associate Manager of Teen Programs – The Associate Manager of Teen Programs supports the Manager of Teen Programs in all tasks related to out-of-school time education programs for middle and high school students. The Associate Manager is directly responsible for administrative tasks and supervision of the Teen Leaders, Scholars Program for Teens, and American History High School Scholars programs. The Associate Manager also provides limited general administrative support to the Education Division.
  • Saturday Academy Instructors – Saturday Academy instructors are part-time, temporary members of the Education Division with discreet responibilities only when Saturday Academy is in the planning phase or is in session. Instructors are responsible for developing and teaching courses as a part of the Saturday Academy program. Instructors submit course proposals to the Manager of Teen Programs for approval, and, upon approval, research and develop a course syllabus, coordinate course logistics, and teach one six- or seven-week course two times per Saturday during the run of a Saturday Academy session.
  • Student Historians High School Interns – The Manager of Teen Programs supervises approximately 50 Student Historians High School Interns over the course of the calendar year, approximately 25 during the academic year and approximately 25 in the summer. The Manager is also responsible for overseeing the supervision of 15 second tier interns during the academic year and 15 in the summer.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years’ experience managing out-of-school-time programming for teens
  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Art History, Education, or a related field required
  • Passion for working with a teen audience, particularly in a museum setting
  • Experience developing and evaluating curriculum for out-of-school time programs for middle and/or high school youth
  • Minimum three years’ experience leading workshops and teaching courses focused on museum collections and exhibitions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail
  • Skillful ability to multitask and balance multiple priorities
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and information/database management
  • Knowledge of the New-York Historical Society mission and collections
  • Knowledge of the NYC Social Studies Scope and Sequence and Common Core State Standards
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings
  • Ability to work individually and as a member of a team
