Job Description

The Docent Program Manager is responsible for administrative oversight of the J. Paul Getty Museum’s docent program, currently at 500 plus docents.  He/she is responsible for setting the overarching goals for the program related to program structure, budget, and recruitment.  The manager sets policy, clearly communicates expectations and designs processes that support policy execution.  He/she leads a group of department stakeholders towards developing a rigorous docent training and observation system in order to develop and sustain a high quality docent program.   The manager is responsible for the Garden and Architecture Site Tour program, including tour content development and training.  In addition to administrative duties, the manager is responsible for supervising three staff members: a docent scheduler, a program coordinator and an education specialist, across two museum sites.  The manager oversees the work of the Docent Leadership Team, which is comprised of a docent representative from each sub-corps and schedules quarterly meetings to discuss matters related to operations, policy and communication with the larger docent corps.

Major Job Responsibilities:
  • Supervision of direct reports, providing guidance with goal-setting and feedback via the annual performance review process
  • Budget oversight, including quarterly reporting and course correction as needed throughout the fiscal year
  • Communicating internally with stakeholders regarding docent training, observation systems, and continuing education
  • Analyzes workflow among docent staff team in order to build efficiencies and provide accurate and timely information to docents
  • Serves as overall program leader, setting a professional program tone and providing internal and external stakeholders with timely and appropriate communication directives

Job Requirements

Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • 3 to 6 years of supervisory and/or project/process management experience
    • Proficiency in standard business software

  • Ability to serve as a model for visitor engagement; knowledge of the collection, gardens, architecture
  • Effective communicator with internal and external stakeholders, ability to clearly articulate goals and expectations to staff and docents
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for creative problem solving across duties, including administrative and content development
