Job Description

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young and Legion of Honor) are seeking a Planned Giving Officer. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Individual Giving, the Planned Giving Officer oversees the implementation of a strategic comprehensive approach for planned giving which includes, but is not limited to, strategies for identifying prospects, qualifying prospects and current donors, developing solicitation strategies, cultivating, soliciting, recognizing and stewarding donors, and marketing planned giving opportunities.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborates with Director of Museums, Director of Development, Senior Management and Board of Trustees to create a planned giving program for the Museums which increases revenue to support the strategic direction of the Museums.
  2. Implements a strategic approach to planned giving including strategies for cultivating, soliciting, recognizing and stewarding donors.
  3. In consultation with legal and financial advisors, works with donors on various aspects of planned giving including charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of unusual or complicated assets.
  4. Creates ways to increase the planned giving program through cultivation and stewardship events.
  5. Calls on donors personally to solicit planned gifts. Prepares call reports following visits or other contacts with donors.
  6. Develops and manages timelines for cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising activities.
  7. Develops processes that include acceptance, management and disposition of gift property, including real estate, limited partnership interests, closely-held and restricted stock, and noncash gifts from donors, including gifts of art.
  8. Creates opportunities to market planned giving program through FAMSF communication vehicles such as website, Fine Arts Magazine, and other donor-related materials, and identify new opportunities for outreach.
  9. Prepares regular reports on progress, budget, receipts, and expenditures related to the planned giving program and the management of fund development activities and submit to Director of Development and other senior staff. 

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city’s largest public arts institutions and comprise the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection of over 4,000 years of ancient and European art including Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in a Beaux-Arts style building overlooking Lincoln Park and the Golden Gate Bridge.

COFAM is the Corporation of Fine Arts Museums and is the privately funded non-profit corporation which supports the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, a department of the City and County of San Francisco.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

WORK EXPERIENCE: Five years of fundraising in planned giving solicitation. Proven fundraising results in a combination of these areas: annual giving; major gift solicitation and planned giving. Development experience in an arts organization preferred.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Must be a highly motivated, well-organized professional with a progressive record of achievement and level of responsibility in fundraising.
  • Must have proven record in prospecting, donor cultivation and gift solicitation experience resulting in successful gift solicitations.
  • General knowledge of the law, with specific emphasis on charitable aspects of tax, estate planning and probate law.
  • Ability to establish and maintain confidential communication with lawyers and financial advisors, verbally and in writing.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy is required to work well with donors, trustees, volunteers, and staff at all levels.
  • Understanding of ethical standards and fundraising principles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve Museums’ goals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, work cooperatively with others to set goals, resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Ability to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, create and implement action plans, and evaluate the process and results.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must have knowledge of fundraising software (preferably Raisers’ Edge).
  • Knowledge of Bay Area audience and philanthropic community is desirable.
  • Interest in fine art and art history preferred.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for events or deadlines.
