The Peabody Essex Museum is looking for spring interns in a wide range of departments:

EXHIBIT TECHNICIAN INTERN

The Exhibit Design department is seeking a student studying carpentry, stage design or museum studies. This candidate must have a working knowledge of power tools, carpentry and general shop safety. The intern will be working in our shop and galleries assisting with the fabrication and installation of casework, graphic structures, plinths and other needs for out active exhibition program such as painting and finishing.

EXHIBIT GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN

The Exhibit Design department is looking for a graphic design student nearing the end of their education who is interested in exploring the intersection of 3D and 2D. The ideal candidate is interested in exhibit or theater design.

Through this internship the right candidate will work with the exhibit department to learn about the challenges and benefits of designing and implementing exhibitions. They will be given the opportunity to research design inspiration presentations, develop exhibit graphics including text panels, banners, labels and other visual graphics, learn about fabrication materials and methods, prepare fabrication files, learn instillation practices and at times assist with gallery install.

DIGITAL ASSET MANAGEMENT INTERN

Join the Exhibitions Research and Publishing team and assist the Digital Asset Manager on initiatives to bring PEM’s database of collections images to the public.We are entering an exciting new era of open access in the museum world, and curating the digital collections is a high priority. The DAM intern will help PEM manage our digital collections with responsibilities such as: vetting image quality, inputting metadata, image research, editing tombstone and credit line information, and creating contact sheets. Additional projects may include assisting on digital asset management for PEM publications and exhibitions.

VIDEO PRODUCTION INTERN

Join the Integrated Media team as a video production intern. This internship is a hands-on learning experience. You’ll collaborate in the creative and technical processes involved in the production of promotional, educational and informative video content. Work with digital editing software to produce video that will appear on PEM’s web media platforms, during PEM events, or in marketing initiatives.

MARKETING INTERN

Join the Marketing team as an intern. As a ready contributor to our marketing team, you’ll assist the department in researching and writing our monthly tourism newsletter, radio spots and e-blasts to PEM subscribers. You’ll also support the department with a variety of tasks including sales, data entry, distributing materials to museum partners and processing donation requests.

EXECUTIVE OFFICE INTERN

Join the Executive Office as an intern. Assist with the administrative, clerical and special projects duties as directed by the Executive Office Manager. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about high-level administrative support and operation of one of the nation’s top museums. Responsibilities include maintaining and setting up of filing systems, preparing correspondence, photocopying, data entry, telephone inquiries, mailings, research, greeting visitors, Trustees and Overseers, VIP Guests and donors. Assist with meeting and special event set-up.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS INTERN

The Education and Interpretation department seeks a creative, driven intern to assist with the research, development and facilitation of spring programming for student and teacher audiences. Gain experience designing gallery activities that promote critical thinking, creative expression and interdisciplinary learning; prepping and running art activities; contributing to teacher professional development programs; and tracking attendance and feedback on tours. A willingness to work independently and as a team, an openness to try new things, and a desire to work with a diverse range of audiences are qualities that we seek.

FAMILY PROGRAMS INTERN

The Family Programs team seeks an enthusiastic and creative intern to support the research and implementation of our various programs and projects for learners of all ages and abilities. You will work closely with the Family Programs Coordinator to create experiences that are centered on sharing art and building community within the museum. Projects may include large-scale festivals, workshops, in-gallery interactives, gallery kits, art carts as well as contributing to the overall vision for Family Programs at PEM.

YOUTH PROGRAMS INTERN

The Education and Interpretation department seeks creative, driven interns to assist with the research, development and facilitation of programming for youth audiences (ages 5-19). You will gain hands-on creative learning experience in the art studios, galleries and in the community. A willingness to work independently and as a team, an openness to try new things, and a desire to work with a diverse range of youth audiences, including English Language Learners, are qualities that week seek. Students/Graduates and community members interested in studio art, art education, museum studies, community arts education and new media technologies are encouraged to apply.

ADULT PROGRAMS INTERN

Join the Education Department for Winter/Spring 2016. You’ll work closely with the Adult Programs staff to research a wide variety of presenters for our programs including visual artists, authors, filmmakers, musicians, art and history experts. You’ll also help create and implement interactive art activities for adults that will be offered at our Exhibition Opening Day Celebrationsas well as the PEM/PM: Evening Party Series. This is a great opportunity to network and gain hands-on experience planning events for the public. Administrative tasks include organizing materials, ordering supplies, and preparing prototypes for art activities.

DEVELOPMENT INTERN

Join the Development team as an intern. You’ll assist in all aspects of the Peabody Essex Museum’s fundraising operations. Responsibilities include providing administrative support to Development department as needed, writing materials for donor cultivation and stewardship, assisting with specific research and data gathering projects, supporting gift acknowledgement and fulfillment activities and assisting in planning and execution of special member events. Interns will also contribute to maintenance of accurate Raiser’s Edge donor database by gathering and updating of contact information and relationships.

CURATORIAL INTERN – EXHIBITIONS AND RESEARCH

Join the curatorial team as an intern assisting with research for upcoming exhibitions and curatorial projects. Assignments will include helping to develop and manage the working list of objects for the exhibition and assisting with research as directed. Tasks will include data management including photocopying, collating, organizing, filing and managing paper and digital files. Reporting to the Associate Curator for Exhibitions and Research this position will help with work on other exhibition and curatorial projects as directed.

CURATORIAL INTERN – AMERICAN ART

Join the American art department as an intern under the direction of the George Putnam Curator of American Art. Curatorial responsibilities include helping to develop and manage working checklists and research materials for exhibitions and installations. Administrative responsibilities include tasks such as copying and scanning, filing, managing paper and digital files, and preparing expenses for reimbursement. Special projects could include researching trends in the American art field and art market and preparing reports; conducting research on the American art collection; and conducting research for upcoming exhibitions including American Impressionist: Childe Hassam and the Isles of Shoals (opens at PEM July 2016) and Samuel F.B. Morse’sGallery of the Louvre and the Art of Invention (opens at PEM October 2016).

CURATORIAL INTERN – PHOTOGRAPHY

Join the Photography Department, where you’ll help manage exhibitions and gain hands on experience working with an extensive collection of historic and modern photographs. Duties may include assisting with the care and conservation of photographs in the permanent collection; establishing and updating research files on individual photographers, data management (including maintaining electronic and paper files) and assisting with other curatorial and exhibition projects as needed.

DESIGN INTERN

Join the Creative Services team as a design intern. If you are nearing completion of a graphics art degree and would like to gain significant workplace experience before graduation, this is the ideal internship for you. You’ll produce a wide range of printed materials including signs, brochures, fliers and postcards and help solve design and construction problems related to museum signage, packaging, etc. Interns will learn to take a job from conception through printing (including press checks).

ART & NATURE CENTER INTERN

Join the Art & Nature Center (ANC) as an intern. You’ll greet and help visitors in the recently renovated ANC and monitor how families interact with exhibits. You’ll help maintain exhibits, teach interactive programs and art activities. You’ll research varied topics while working on independent projects. Possible projects include: supporting exhibition evaluation, generating public programming ideas and exploring future ANC exhibition topics. Administrative tasks include copying, preparing for programs, preparing mailings and organizing supplies.
