Washington College invites applicants for Director/Curator of Kohl Gallery, the College’s primary visual arts venue on campus. The successful applicant will design and implement an innovative, diverse program of historical, contemporary, and student art exhibitions with related lectures, artist talks and other events. Gallery exhibitions and events should cultivate Kohl Gallery’s role as a vital visual arts center, advance its mission of engaged teaching, and complement the College Curriculum in all disciplines. Gallery activities should also enhance the broader College mission of liberal learning and interdisciplinary/co-curricular opportunities. The Director/Curator will be responsible to college administration while also working in collaboration with College faculty and student interns. The part-time position, which begins January 2016, works during the academic year and may be eligible for retirement and health insurance benefits.

Key responsibilities include: 1) forward-thinking development, maintenance, and publicity for a two-year program of exhibitions, 2) management of all collaborations and logistical matters related to individual exhibitions, 3) recruitment of and collaboration with guest curators, artists, and exhibit designers, as well as Art & Art History faculty to facilitate majors’ Senior Capstone Experience, and any College faculty whose pedagogical/research objectives overlap with Kohl Gallery’s mission, 4) outreach to key constituencies on and off campus, 5) development and stewardship of donor resources for programmatic growth, 6) management of budgetary and day-to-day operations of the gallery, 7) management of a gallery advisory board made up mostly of peers in the arts who evaluate submissions for exhibitions made by the director/curator and advise the director/curator generally, 8) manage the gallery’s student intern program. There may also be opportunities for additional responsibilities, including teaching.

Minimum Required Qualifications: The candidate will have either a Master’s or PhD in Museum/Gallery Studies, Curatorial Studies, Art History or Studio Art with one to three years minimum experience with innovative curatorial or administrative work in a gallery, museum or other comparable arts setting.

OR a Bachelor’s in Museum/Gallery Studies, Curatorial Studies, Art History or Studio Art with three or more years minimum experience with innovative curatorial or administrative work in a gallery, museum or other comparable arts setting.
