Visitor Experience Interpretation and Evaluation Manager

The Interpretation and Evaluation Manager provides oversight for the development and evaluation of new and existing interpretive programs that support the mission of New England Aquarium while supporting staff in carrying out multi-faceted public education and interpretive programs.

The Manager works with the Visitor Education team to develop, implement, and evaluate educational presentations and interpretation led by employees, interns, and volunteers. Utilizing best practices in framing and other research-based communication techniques, and incorporating knowledge of cutting edge practices and technology in informal interpretation as well as formal learning theory, the Manager ensures that our interpretation meets the educational goals of New England Aquarium and engages a broad audience helping to create the next generations of ocean stewards.

SCHEDULE

This is a full time, regular position working Tuesday through Saturday.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. In partnership with the Visitor Education and Training Manager, oversee the day-to-day operations of the Visitor Education team by supporting the scheduling and implementation of a daily schedule that meets the interpretive needs of visitors and supports the overall mission of the Aquarium. Remains flexible to changes in programming and provides support to Senior Educators and Visitor Programs specialists in carrying out their responsibilities.

2. Supervise a staff of senior educators and visitor program specialists to ensure consistency, accountability, and operational efficiency. Work closely with the Visitor Education and Training Manager to communicate program developments and ensure appropriate training of staff.

3. Design, implement and evaluate interpretation for new exhibits and changing theme programs that are supportive of the mission of the Aquarium and attentive to the educational needs of various audiences (family, school group, adult, etc.). Be attentive and responsive to diversity and accessibility needs of our audiences.

4. Delivers direct interpretation to the public, working closely with various Aquarium departments to develop relationships and strong lines of communication. Should be comfortable communicating with and guiding special groups/individuals/VIPs at a moment’s notice and in unusual situations.

5. Implement policies and practices for recruiting, screening and hiring staff and volunteers who are enthusiastic, outgoing, resourceful, professional, and experienced and who are committed to the Aquarium’s mission, on-going learning, and excellent mission based interpretation.

6. Collaborate with the Visitor Education and Training Manager to maintain a consistent and on-going training, evaluation, and feedback program for staff and volunteers to ensure consistency and quality in mission based interpretation that meets the Aquarium’s goals. Ensure a basic level of shared knowledge, build expertise and progression as appropriate, and recognize and reward excellent performance.

7. Help implement meetings that bring the group together around a shared vision and provide opportunities for feedback from staff to management. Ensure strong communication among staff and that all staff are consistently updated with important Aquarium information.

8. Provide leadership and mentoring to the Senior Educators and Visitor Programs Specialists. Serve as a resource for problem-solving and maintain high levels of accountability for staff. Provide professional development opportunities to allow them to continue to grow in their positions and at the Aquarium.

9. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Training and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in education, communication, or other related field and 5-7 years of related experience in visitor education for a busy cultural institution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Skilled manager of staff and programs

· Experience in different types of program evaluation

· Interpretive experience in a fast paced, high volume environment

· Superior attention to detail

· Exemplary written and verbal communication skills

· Ability to multi-task

· Comfortable with technology and a/v equipment

· Willingness to have flexible schedule

· Knowledge of formal and informal learning theories

· Experience with strategic communication strategies

· Passion for the mission of the New England Aquarium and mission based interpretation
