The Jewish Museum is the only art museum in the world that focuses on the dynamic interplay between artistic practice (both contemporary and historical) and an unparalleled collection of art and artifacts reflecting global Jewish identity and tradition from ancient times to the present day. The Position

The Digital Asset Management (DAM) Manager is the key knowledge owner for the museum’s visual assets and supporting software. The DAM Manager organizes and manages the collection, distribution, and archiving of the museum’s diverse digital assets. Major responsibilities include developing metadata taxonomy framework, uploading and tagging assets, managing and troubleshooting imports, updating metadata and general system maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the JM’s lead for system-wide DAM software administration and configuration
  • Creates, defines, and documents policies, procedures, and workflows for storage and delivery of digital assets and associated metadata that support the DAM system infrastructure
  • Maintains the integration between the collections management system (TMS) and the DAM system (Piction)
  • Manages the uploading of assets to the DAM system, including developing and updating embedded metadata
  • Develops and implements metadata schemas – input descriptive metadata to add value to digital assets and improve search results including controlled vocabularies
  • Manages User Access – Creates user accounts with variable security and access rights – Defines user roles and responsibilities within the DAM system
  • Defines requirements / criteria for all end assets to be approved and communicates to all internal staff
  • Manages the relationship with DAM system vendor, including contract, scope, and software development negotiations. Partners with vendor to ensure system functions properly, updates are applied and tested, and new functionalities are tested and implemented
  • Leads efforts to locate and transfer high value digital assets from museum staff, internal servers, and local hard drives to the DAM system
  • Trains and educates museum staff on proper DAM system usage and best practices. Promote use of the DAM system and provides technical support
  • Leads efforts to evaluate, integrate and test with other technologies to deliver better access to digital assets
  • Maintains current awareness of digital technology and trends, especially within the museum profession
  • Manages, assists, and develops the Rights and Permissions Coordinator.
  • Consults Rights and Permissions Coordinator on content usage and licensing rights needed
  • Dedicates time to innovation and quality improvement by identifying new ways to achieve goals, keeping current with trends, and applying new concepts and solutions accordingly
  • Establishes DAM system metrics and reports
  • Investigates, proposes, and implements a strategy to preserve digital assets

Other Responsibilities

  • Participation in online digital resources such as the Google Art Project and ArtStor
  • Plans and participates in assessment
  • Participates in conferences and symposia

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success implementing digital asset management solutions and workflows in a complex creative environment
  • Self-motivated, organized and self-managed
  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of legal issues around digital asset use and solutions that serve both creative and legal requirements
  • Proven success as a key member of a cross-departmental team. Ability to work equally well with people in creative and technical positions
  • Ability to apply sound judgment while working independently within tight timelines
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan, make assignments and monitor performance
  • Outstanding attention to detail and a passion for organizing, classifying, and categorizing digital assets
  • Enthusiasm for increasing institutional, educational and public access to the Jewish Museum’s digital cultural content
  • Comfort with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop, relational databases, PICTION and TMS a plus
