Job Description

Lehman College Art Gallery is a dynamic visual arts institution serving the greater New York area as well as the Lehman Collegecampus of the City University of New York. The gallery, a separately incorporated 501(c)3, presents contemporary art exhibitions and education programs. It also promotes the art and architecture through two educational Websites, Bronx Public Art and Bronx Architecture. The gallery has a very active school program for K-12 students with over 12,0000 visits in the current year. Its exhibitions and programs have received critical attention in the press including The New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews, Art Nexus and many other periodicals. Lehman is a liberal arts college on 37 tree-lined acres in the Bronx, the gallery is located in the center of the campus in a building designed by Marcel Breuer.

The position requires a unique combination of curatorial, educational, administrative, and fundraising skills. The ideal candidate will have a passion for contemporary visual arts; strong interpersonal and relationship building skills; proven leadership ability in all aspects of gallery administration; and a record of success in managing development and fundraising efforts. The Director works closely with the Board of Trustees of the Lehman College Art Gallery, Inc. and reports to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Oversee strategic planning, administrative responsibilities, marketing, and financial budgeting.
  • Create and develop inspired contemporary art exhibitions, related publications, and websites.
  • Oversee education programs for all ages including large Arts in Education program with the Bronx and Yonkers public schools. Education projects also include the ongoing education websites, Bronx Public Art and Bronx Architecture.
  • Oversee fundraising projects, membership program, and grant writing seeking support from foundation, corporation, and federal, state, and city sources, as well as individual donors.
  • Act as Executive Director of the Lehman College Art Gallery, Inc. and work with the Board of Trustees to ensure the effectiveness of the gallery and its financial stability.
  • Work with the college administration and academic departments to support the strategic plan of the college.
  • Act as a persuasive advocate for the gallery with public officials and funding sources.
  • Promote the gallery on campus, in the community, and in the press to raise its visibility, impact, and to increase audience participation and build public engagement.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required
  • Master’s degree in art history, museum studies, or an equivalent degree with a through knowledge of contemporary art preferred
  • Eight or more years in a senior level management role within a gallery, museum, or similar non-profit institution
  • Proven ability to create and develop innovative exhibition and education programs
  • Demonstrated record of success with development and fundraising
  • History of positive working relationship with a Board of Trustees
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with the staff, student interns, volunteers, the Lehman College Art Gallery, Inc. Board of Trustees, campus departments, and the diverse communities the gallery serves
  • A strong interest in arts education

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Oversees an Art Center or Museum, promoting and directing programs and initiatives.

  • Works with senior management to create a vision and strategy for art/museum collection which fulfills the mission of the College
  • Develops, researches, curates and markets high quality exhibits; designs educational programs around exhibits such as lectures, films, learning aids and internships which relate to the College’s curricula
  • Oversees the development and implementation of creative programming to attract both sponsors and audiences
  • Directs the administrative functions of the Center/Museum, including budget, archives, inventory, acquisitions, security and facilities; Presents reports on all operations consistent with best practices in the not-for-profit/public sectors
  • Establishes and cultivates community and cultural relationships and partnerships; participates in funding initiatives
  • Develops relationships between the Center/Museum and College academic and administrative departments
  • Hires, and manages Center/Museum staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
