Description

The New York State Education Department is seeking applicants for a permanent administrative and research position of Chief Curator (History), M-2 in the New York State Museum.  The Chief Curator (History) will exercise statewide leadership in promoting New York history. The incumbent of this position will form partnerships with history scholars, curators and cultural institutions to increase education about, access to, and public understanding of New York history and New York’s role in the United States’ history. The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following;

•Provide leadership in the field of New York history;

•Collaborate with State Museum staff, and external scholars, curators and historians to develop history collections, exhibitions, and research initiatives;

•Participate on Museum exhibition teams developing major themes of New York’s human history;

•Oversee development, management and improvement of the State Museum’s history collections;

•Implement history collections and research policies and procedures;

•Continue a program of independent research and publishing;

•Prepare competitive grant proposals to provide funding for research and collections programs in history;

•Manage the museum’s history unit budgets;

•Supervise staff; and

•Work with Museum management and history staff to plan and implement movement of the collections and staff to a new collections facility.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: For permanent appointment, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title M1 or higher deemed eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. In addition, candidates must possess a Master’s degree in history, American studies**, or public history and four years of professional experience in collections management and/or research.  For provisional appointment, candidates must have one year permanent competitive service as Senior historian OR possess a Master’s degree in history, American studies**, or public history and four years of professional experience in collections management and/or research; OR a doctoral degree in history, American studies**, or public history and two years of professional experience in collections management and/or research.

** Including or supplemented with nine credit hours in History.

PREFERRED QUALIFCATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates who have a strong research background, managerial skills, museum collections experience and a commitment to presenting New York’s history to a broad public.  Other preferred qualifications are:

•Administrative experience in a research, academic, or cultural institution

•Research focused on American history with an emphasis on New York and/or the eastern United States and on broad, synthetic topics

•Leadership in the field and ability to work with various constituencies

•Experience in Museum history collections

•An extensive publications record

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  This will be a permanent or provisional appointment.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $99,545 based on annual performance advances.
