The Paul J. and Edith Ingalls Vignos, Jr. Curator of European Paintings and Sculpture (1500-1800)

The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks a highly motivated, experienced curator of European painting and sculpture, specializing in the period between 1500 and 1800. The collection European Paintings and Sculpture is of international importance, with particular strength in Italian and Spanish Baroque painting as well as 17th-century Northern art, and Renaissance bronzes, making this position an extraordinary opportunity.

The Curator of European Paintings and Sculpture, 1500-1800, reports to the Deputy Director for Collections.

Primary responsibilities include:

•             Pursuing scholarly research to support acquisitions, the installation of the collection, exhibitions, publications, and gallery installations.

•             In consultation with the Museum Director and Deputy Director for Collections, reviewing and changing as necessary the current plan for the development of the collection and acquiring major works of art through purchase and donation.

•             Installation of the galleries of European paintings and sculpture, 1500-1800, working as appropriate with curatorial colleagues to integrate objects from other collections.

•             Proposing ideas for exhibitions and publications and then, working with the Deputy Director for Collections and Director of Exhibitions and Publications to develop projects.

•             Working with colleagues in the Education Department on programs related to the collection and didactic materials. Leveraging opportunities to utilize electronic means to interpret European art.

•             Working with colleagues in Advancement to identify and nurture potential donors for projects related to the collection.

A Ph.D. in Art History is preferred, as is a minimum of five years of museum experience. Proficiency in English is required; proficiency in another European language is preferred. Candidates will be judged on their excellence and promise, curatorial and scholarly record, and interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work as part of a team is essential, as is basic supervisory experience. Candidates outside the United States are welcome to apply.
