Museum Specialist (Curatorial Assistant)

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery together form the Smithsonian’s Museums of Asian Art. The Museums hold extraordinary collections of Asian art and American art of the Aesthetic movement and share the mission of encouraging enjoyment and understanding of the arts of Asia through exhibitions, original research, and the preservation of the cultural heritage of Asia.

The Curatorial Assistant will be responsible for administrative and curatorial support to three curators: the curator of Islamic Art (who is also Chief Curator); the curator of South Asian Art; and the curator of American art. Primary responsibilities include facilitating meetings, arranging for travel and procurements, and maintaining budgets; liaising between other staff on both short- and long-term projects; and assisting with research for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and other curatorial endeavors. The successful applicant will have experience in prioritizing multiple and diverse tasks with varying timelines; communicating and collaborating effectively with all members of the Smithsonian community; ability to carry out guided research; and skill in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with TMS or comparable collections database desirable. Salary range is $51-55K. Applicants should email resume to AsiaCuratorial@si.edu by November 3, 2015.
