Description

The Cummer seeks a Full-Time Director of Finance to direct and have responsibility for the organization’s accounting practices, the maintenance of its financial records, and the preparation, promotion and interpretation of financial reports for management and external groups.  Will direct and have overall responsibility for internal controls, forecasting, financial reporting and budgetary controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct, manage and coordinate the work of the Finance Department, including general accounting, auditing, cash management, endowment oversight, fixed assets and property and casualty insurance.  Hire, train, coach and evaluate all Finance Department staff
  • Work with direct reports to establish goals for each year and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
  • Oversee supervision of Visitor Services department, emphasis on the management of the Manager of Visitor Services & Store Buyer.
  • Responsible for the proper operation and integrity of the Museum’s information technology, computer systems and telecommunications.
  • Monitor financial transactions and prepare detailed financial statements.
  • Provide and interpret financial information and reports necessary to the Board of Trustees, the Finance, Investment and Audit Committee, the Director, and other department directors.
  • Examine, evaluate, recommend and implement improvements to administrative and financial internal control systems and procedures to insure audit compliance.
  • Prepare audit work papers, statements and reports for the independent audit team.  Serve as the primary contact during the annual and interim audits of financial reports.
  • Supervise the development of the final budget for approval by the Finance, Investment and Audit Committee and the Board of Trustees.
  • Work as staff liaison with Finance, Investment and Audit Committee.
  • Serve as liaison with Chief Investment Officer to monitor and report on the performance of the Museum’s investment portfolio.  Assist with periodic updates to the Investment Policy Statement to maximize return and minimize risk of the portfolio.
  • Prepare/review required filings including annual federal and state tax returns, sales and use tax returns, city and state registrations, grant applications and financial reports.
  • Review annual 1099 and 1096 reporting.
  • Conduct special research projects relating to non-recurring or infrequent financial transactions.
  • Monitor, approve and maintain all contractual agreements involving the Museum.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance and/or business administration.
  • CPA Certification or MBA preferred.
  • At least five years accounting experience, preferably in the not-for-profit industry or public accounting,
  • Prior management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to form, lead and develop high-performing teams
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting, required.
  • Ability to handle cash, checks and assets received in a secure manner.
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departmental functions.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with management, the Board of Trustees, donors, vendors and visitors.
  • Excellent organizational skills and process/project management abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects.
  • Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures.
