General Purpose:  Reporting to the Curator, the Nina and Lee Griggs Assistant Curator of European Art will provide curatorial management of one of the premier collections in this country of European paintings – as well as growing collections of European sculpture and decorative arts – from the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century.  Best known for its holdings of Italian Renaissance art, the collection is expanding its scope and depth to integrate more actively with the teaching mission of the Gallery and the University and to serve more fully the wider public of New Haven and Southern New England.  In tandem with the Curator, the Assistant Curator will plan exhibitions, programs, and publications; oversee maintenance, conservation, and installation issues; lecture on aspects of the department’s holdings; initiate research on acquisitions, loans, and on the permanent collection; field public inquiries and oversee the department’s presence on the Gallery’s website; assume stewardship and donor cultivation responsibilities; and, represent the department on Gallery and University committees.

Required Education and Experience:  Master’s Degree in Art History and two years of curatorial experience or an equivalent education and experience.

Qualifications:

  • Independent and self-directed, with the ability to take initiative, anticipate actions needed, and to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and superior organizational skills. An effective collaborator both within the department and in the larger Gallery environment, with a positive attitude that supports the department’s and the Gallery’s goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct original research, to write lucidly, and to communicate effectively among diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines among conflicting priorities.
  • Dedicated to problem solving, to accuracy, and to completeness with a willingness to learn from direct personal involvement and hands-on experience.
  • Preferred:  Ph.D. in Art History or related subject; thorough knowledge of art history appropriate to the collection. Proficiency in German, French, or Italian; fluency preferred. Conservation, maintenance, and object handling experience. Exhibition and publication experience. Donor stewardship and public speaking experience.
