Summary Position Statement:

Under the general direction of the Director of Design, The Graphic and Digital Media Designer is responsible for assisting with the creation, design, production, and installation of museum graphics including exhibition graphics and labels, program identities and flyers, illustrations info-graphics, and digital media. This position also creates and edits visual media for the museum, including photography and video for exhibition, program and online platforms. The incumbent will participate in all facets of design and production, including graphic, photo, digital media, and video production.

Essential Functions:

  • Work as a member of an integrated and agile team of designers and project teams that include curators, exhibition designer, exhibition technicians and others to develop interpretive graphics, including text panels, artifact citations, info-graphics and illustrations, both print, digital and three-dimensional environmental graphics.
  • Collaborate with vendors as needed.
  • Lead multimedia creation through all phases of production: pre-production, to editing and post-production. As part of this process, creation of content will be developed by executive leadership, curators, educators, and other department representatives.
  • Record and edit video and color correct files (according to project needs); supply audio/video files with appropriate naming and compression specs based upon museum guidelines.
  • Create and modify visual assets for delivery in the museum environment, through Web platforms, and via mobile devices, as required.
  • Manages, designs, and executes distinct and innovative print and digital creative for the museum, including assets for exhibitions, programs, web, e-communication, and digital marketing.
  • Works with Museum brand and messaging for consistency of visual identity throughout the Museum.
  • Produce photographs and videos of museum exhibitions and programs for digital
  • Develop the layout and production design of presentations, reports, and publications, including the Museum newsletter and artist catalogues.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Create graphics or animations as needed based upon templates.
  • Facilitate design alignment across departments and communication vehicles.
  • Gather, organize, and manage all digital assets; coordinate converting them to the appropriate formats, and trafficking them to any necessary parties including external video teams.
  • Develop layout plans for displaying artifacts and other exhibition-related elements within a given space.
  • Strategize, develop, and advise on internal efficiencies for photo and video archiving, storage, and transfer working cross-departmentally in the museum.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Principals of graphic and visual design
  • Graphic design, color, type, illustration, animation, and various print and layout techniques.
  • Photography and videography skills, including editing
  • Proven experience with branding, including for diverse audiences and platforms.
  • Be familiar with screen-based design and digital platforms
  • Be very flexible, dexterously creative, and professional.
  • Audio/Visual production and delivery standards and methods for documentary and entertainment modes.
  • Experience with digital platforms
  • Creating visual media from conceptual ideas and a diverse range of content
  • Follow brand guidelines while also developing dynamic, sophisticated and distinct visual assets for the Museum

Ability to:

  • Take high-quality photographs and video and edit with basic Mac-based software
  • Conduct off-camera interviews with subjects.
  • Work independently and organize time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands, and seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Design or related field required.
  • Three to five years’ experience using Microsoft and Adobe Suite software required.
  • Creative thinker who can produce multiple projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; accessible and approachable with interview subjects and other contacts
  • Proven experience in planning and time management.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
